He created works for diverse venues in San Francisco during his lifetime, including murals for DV8, a club once located in the South of Market neighborhood, and a huge, multi-panel painting for the South of Market Child-care Center (also known as the Saint Patrick’s Daycare Center). Haring’s outdoor sculpture Untitled (Three Dancing Figures 1989), located at Third and Howard Streets, is a prominent feature of Moscone Convention Center, and his triptych altarpiece The Life of Christ (1990) is installed in the AIDS Chapel at Grace Cathedral." Hotlines were incredibly important as ignorance &amp; misinformation was widespread in regards to the crisis. Keith Haring (1958 -1990) is widely recognized for his colorful paintings, drawings, sculptures and murals. Haring exploded onto the early 1980s New York art scene with his vivid graffiti-inspired drawings, many of which found exposure in the public realm, such as the Times Square billboard broadcast of his famous Radiant Child in 1982. Haring's instantly recognizable `cartoon-like' imagery not only drew on the iconography of contemporary pop and club culture but also looked back to the patterns and rhythms of Islamic and Japanese art, and primitive wall-paintings,. Furthermore his work also reflected a profound commitment to social justice and activism, and raised numerous issues that remain relevant today, including the AIDS crisis, the Cold War and fear of nuclear attack, racism, the excesses of capitalism and environmental degradation.

The idea for this type of review originated among Polish graphic artists and was directly initiated by Eryk Lipiński, for many years the organisation was handled by Prof. Józef Mroszczak, always assisted by Prof. Henryk Tomaszewski, and since 1990, Prof. Lech Majewski (currently President of the International Poster Biennale) has taken care of the Biennale. After 1994, the Biennale was held at the Poster Museum at Wilanów to finally return in 2018 to its birthplace, the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. The end of the Second World War marked the dawn of a new period in the development of Polish poster art, which became known as the Polish School of Posters. The recently installed Communist regime began commissioning artists to design posters not only with social and political messages, but also, and more prominently, to promote the many aspects of the government-run (Ministry of Art and Culture) cultural media: concerts, exhibitions, film, jazz, opera, theatre, etc. and the circus (cyrk in Polish). The artists were instructed to reject Western values in their posters and were to follow rules about appropriate messaging, but other than that, they had complete artistic freedom. This resulted in some truly unique and bold designs, chock-full with individual personality, wit and subversive commentary. Heavy in metaphors and symbolism and executed in a painterly fashion with handcrafted typography the posters of the Polish School of Posters significantly influenced the international development of graphic design. The highly original designs remain contemporary to this day and continue to gain appreciation.

Left unfinished due to assorted legal and financial issues until it was fully assembled for release in 2000,&nbsp;Downtown 81&nbsp;follows Basquiat, a naturally compelling screen presence, as he tries to hawk a painting (one of the artist’s own first works) while hustling for a place to sleep. Made famous by their poster Do Women have to be naked to get into the Met. Museum? and their gorilla-mask disguises, the collective uses a combination of iconic imagery and statistics to disseminate their message. “We try to twist an issue around and present it in a way that hasn’t been seen before, using facts and humor, in the hope of changing people’s mind,” said a masked member of the group. “We take on issues we are passionate about, but we don’t always succeed. If we don’t come up with something we think is worth putting out there, we don’t.” The artists’ work is often displayed in public spaces, and has taken the form of billboards, pamphlets, and museum installations. The Guerilla Girls was founded in 1985 in reaction to The Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition “An International Survey of Recent Painting and Sculpture,” which included 13 female artists and 152 male artists. Soon after, members protested the lack of work by women in a number of major art institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Since their founding, the Guerilla Girls have been critiqued for a lack of racial diversity and promoting essentialist feminist, issues which the group has since attempted to resolve. The group’s work is currently held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate Gallery in London, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others.

The Beatles Apple Boutique Collection Of Posters

A nuclear disarmament poster designed and distributed by <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Keith%20Haring&amp;tab=objects&amp;sortBy=bsp_dotcom_prod_en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Keith Haring</a> for an activist event in 1982.<ul><li>After Keith Haring (American, 1958-1990).</li><li>Offset-lithograph.</li><li>Printed signature on lower right.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> In 1982 Keith Haring created this poster for Nuclear Disarmament, which features his signature Radiant Baby in a mushroom cloud. This historical work marks Haring's first poster and helped engineer his focus on social activism. On June 2, 1982 Haring transported the stack of posters in a handcart to New York's Central Park, to what was the largest demonstration to date against nuclear weapons and the 1980s global arms race. There were approximately one million protesters and Haring gave his posters away for free (source: Keith Haring: Posters Prestel pub.). “Babies represent the possibility of the future,” Haring said, “the understanding of perfection, how perfect we could be. There is nothing negative about a baby, ever … The reason that the “baby” has become my logo or signature is that it is the purest and most positive experience of human existence.” A rare example presented here in fine condition. Keith Haring (American, 1958–1990), a Neo-Pop and Graffiti artist, had a short but prolific career centered on a vision to unite “high art,” urban aesthetics, and public spaces using humorous, irreverent, and poignant works. Born in Pennsylvania, Haring attended the Ivy School of Art in Pittsburgh for two years, planning to become a commercial artist. He found this path unsatisfying, and instead chose to study at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he met fellow artists Jean Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf. Haring immersed himself in the culture of the city’s streets and clubs, and, in 1980, began covering the blank billboards on subway station walls with his Subway drawings in chalk. Haring’s bold public art attracted the attention of several galleries, and, by the early 1980s, he was painting Neo-Pop works and large murals full time. In an effort to make his art widely accessible, Haring opened the Pop Shop in 1986 in downtown New York, selling commercial items adorned with his signature, cartoonish imagery. Haring combined graffiti, hip-hop, and urban aesthetics, frequently depicting animals, figures, commercial icons, sexual imagery, and childlike motifs in pieces that were both playful and concerned with social issues. His work became increasingly confrontational following his 1987 diagnosis of AIDS. Haring resolved to work harder than ever in his remaining years, creating pieces with a fervent speed and devoting his art to social action in addition to his personal expression. In 1989, he established the Keith Haring Foundation, whose goal is to promote art programs and public spaces for children, and to raise awareness about AIDS. He died on February 16, 1990 in New York at the age of 31. In addition to hundreds of exhibitions held during his lifetime, Haring has been the subject of numerous retrospectives in New York, San Francisco, Paris, Tokyo, and Berlin since his death.

His white chalk drawings could often been found on the blank poster marquees in New York’s public spaces and subways. “I don't think art is propaganda,” he once stated. “It should be something that liberates the soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further. It celebrates humanity instead of manipulating it.” Born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, PA, he grew up in neighboring Kutztown, where he was inspired to draw from an early age by Walt Disney cartoons and his father who was an amateur cartoonist. After briefly studying commercial art in Pittsburgh, Haring came across a show of the works of Pierre Alechinksy and decided to pursue a career in fine art instead. He moved to New York in the late 1970s to attend the School of Visual Arts, and soon immersed himself in the city’s graffiti culture. By the mid-1980s, he had befriended fellow artists Andy Warhol, Kenny Scharf, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and collaborated with celebrities like the singer Grace Jones. Diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1988, Haring’s prodigious career was brief, and he died of AIDS-related complications on February 16, 1990 at the age of 31. Before his death, Haring established the Keith Haring Foundation, a non-profit committed to raising awareness of the illness through art programing and community outreach. Throughout his career, Haring made his art widely available through the location of his murals, as well as through the Pop Shop—Haring's own storefront which he used to sell his memorabilia. The artist’s mural Crack is Wack (1986), can still be seen today on a retaining wall along FDR Drive in Manhattan. Haring’s works can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.

"The run of the Dwan Gallery was brief but momentous. During its eleven years, Virginia Dwan mounted 134 shows, introducing viewers in Los Angeles and New York to the most challenging art practices of the time." — Earl A. Powell IIIWhen Virginia Dwan opened the storied Dwan Gallery in a Los Angeles storefront in 1959, she (together with Ferus Gallery) helped establish Los Angeles as a nexus of the art world to rival New York or Paris. While Dwan's earliest exhibitions focused on certain established artists and Abstract Expressionists, by the early 1960s the gallery was increasingly showing Pop and Neo-Dada artists like Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, Yves Klein, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, and James Rosenquist. By the middle of the decade, and especially after establishing a second location in NYC in 1965, Dwan focused increasingly on major minimalist and conceptual artists such as Sol LeWitt, Carl Andre, Arakawa, Robert Morris, Dan Flavin and others — eventually becoming the most important gallery to support landscape and other Earthworks artists like Robert Smithson and Michael Heizer. Though the gallery would last little more than a decade, its impact was enormous. Dwan not only exhibited and promoted her artists, she also funded their projects — and it is not an overstatement to say that without the support of Dwan such canonical works as Robert Smithson's "Spiral Jetty" and Michael Heizer's "Double Negative" (which the artist eventually gave to Dwan) would simply not exist. Dwan was also a pioneer in creating promotional materials that were themselves works of art, frequently designed by the artists for conceptual works that otherwise often lacked any other physical manifestation. Highlights of the collection include an exceptional unfolded example of Michael Heizer's monumental poster for "Double Negative / 1,000' x 42' x 30 / 40,000 Tons Displacement," as well as the rare poster for Yves Klein's "Le Monochrome," one of the few shows mounted during his brief life and one that marked a turning point in the gallery's history toward minimalism and conceptualism. Other major documents include a beautiful copy of the innovative catalogue BOXES, a complete set of postcards from Dwan's groundbreaking series of "Language" shows, as well as early and important pieces from Larry Rivers, Claes Oldenburg, Sol LeWitt, Carl Andre, Robert Rauschenberg, Kenneth Snelson, Dan Flavin, Ed Keinholz, James Rosenquist, Lucas Samaras, Robert Ryman, and numerous others. The collection is in remarkable condition overall, with many of the posters unfolded. At 74 items, it is one of the larger groups of Dwan material. The Smithsonian holds a nearly complete collection, as does Bard — both donated by Virginia Dwan herself. The next largest grouping is at the Getty (which consists of 57 items), and after that we locate only scattered individual items. As such, this collection represents nearly two-thirds of all Dwan exhibitions mounted during its twelve-year reign, and one of the largest to come to market. A major opportunity to acquire a dense and representative overview of this pioneering gallery and curator.

Hotlines were incredibly important as ignorance and misinformation were widespread in regards to the crisis. In 1990, the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program legislation was first enacted as the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act. Keith Haring (1958–1990) is widely recognized for his colorful paintings, drawings, sculptures and murals. Haring exploded onto the early 1980s New York art scene with his vivid graffiti-inspired drawings, many of which found exposure in the public realm, such as the Times Square billboard broadcast of his famous Radiant Child in 1982. Haring's instantly recognizable "cartoon-like" imagery not only drew on the iconography of contemporary pop and club culture, but also looked back to the patterns and rhythms of Islamic and Japanese art and primitive cave paintings. Furthermore, his work also reflected a profound commitment to social justice and activism and raised numerous issues that remain relevant today, including the AIDS crisis, the Cold War and fear of nuclear attack, racism, the excesses of capitalism and environmental degradation.

Secret Pastures explored politics, economics, race, and sexuality, depicting men dancing with each other, interracial communities, and shared labor that served people rather than business. Keith Haring was an American artist and social activist. Born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, PA, he grew up in neighboring Kutztown, where he was inspired to draw from an early age by Walt Disney cartoons and his father who was an amateur cartoonist. After briefly studying commercial art in Pittsburgh, Haring came across a show of the works of Pierre Alechinksy and decided to pursue a career in fine art, moving to New York in the late 1970s to attend the School of Visual Arts, and soon immersed himself in the city’s graffiti culture. By the mid-1980s, he had befriended fellow artists Andy Warhol, Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and collaborated with celebrities like the singer Grace Jones. Diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1988, Haring’s prodigious career was brief, and he died of AIDS-related complications on February 16, 1990 at the age of 31. Before his death, Haring established the Keith Haring Foundation, a non-profit committed to raising awareness of the illness through art programing and community outreach. Throughout his career, Haring made his art widely available through the location of his murals, as well as through the Pop Shop—Haring's own storefront which he used to sell his memorabilia. The artist’s mural Crack Is Wack (1986), can still be seen today on a retaining wall along FDR Drive in Manhattan. Area was the place where A-listers such as Andy Warhol, Francesco Clemente, Julian Schnabel, Madonna, JFK Jr. and many others went to see and be seen, a place where Basquiat DJ'd, while Keith Haring and Andy Warhol produced several installations. Studies for a Boy Book Exhibition Announcement Poster

A dizzying poster of Kusama's iconic polka-dotted soft sculptures, advertising the opening of the 1965 installation at the Castellane Gallery of her first ever mirror room, hand-addressed by Kusama in 1965 to the Museum of Modern Art.<ul><li>Produced by Castellane Gallery in 1965.</li><li>Hand-addressed by the artist to the Museum of Modern Art on verso, with 1965 Grand Central Station postmark.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> Kusama's exhibition, titled in full "Infinity Mirror Room —Phalli's Field (Floor Show)," was documented in a series of photographs of the artist reclining on her own "phallus meadow" in a red leotard — the most famous and striking images of her work from that era. In her autobiography, Kusama describes the installation that marked the beginning of arguably her best-known and most popular series of works: "The walls of the room were mirrors, and sprouting from the floor were thousands of white canvas phallic forms covered with red polka dots. The mirrors reflected them infinitely, summoning up a sublime, miraculous field of phalluses. People could walk barefoot through the phallus meadow, becoming one with the work and experiencing their own figures and movement as part of the sculpture. Wandering into this infinite wonderland, where a grandiose aggregation of human sexual symbols had been transformed into a humorous, polka-dotted field, viewers found themselves spellbound by the imagination as it exorcised sexual sickness in the naked light of day." The New York Times described Kusama's mid-'60s work as the "awful vision of a self-perpetuating infinity," but they meant they liked it. The verso of the poster is addressed by Kusama to MoMA, which now holds numerous works by the artist in their permanent collection and mounted her site-specific installation Narcissus Garden at PS1 in 2018. An important association of this scarce document for an early and landmark show from this major artist — distinctly rare addressed by Kusama.
