On July 24, 1983, the Kansas City Royals took on the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. With two outs in the 9th inning and the Yankees leading 4-3, Royals star George Brett stepped up to the plate with a runner on base. Brett smashed a go-ahead home run only for Yankees manager Billy Martin to protest the amount of pine tar on the barrel of Brett’s bat. Umpire Tim McClelland upheld the protest and declared Brett out, which ended the game. Incensed, Brett famously stormed out of the dugout to argue the controversial call. 

Though the Yankees were initially declared the winner, the Royals successfully protested the game. On August 18, the game was resumed from the moment of Brett’s memorable home run. The Royals held on to win 5-4.
