Rowling</a>.<ul><li>J.K. Rowling (English).</li><li>Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.</li><li>London: Bloomsbury, 1997.</li><li>Octavo.</li><li>Original matt laminated printed paper boards, spine and front cover lettered in white, yellow, dark green and black, without dust jacket, as issued, housed in a red quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery.&nbsp;</li></ul> All the required points of the first printing are present: Bloomsbury imprint, 10-down-to-1 number line, no space between “Thomas” and “Taylor” on p. 4, the list of equipment on p. 53 with “1 wand” appearing twice, and the misprint “Philospher’s” on the rear cover. Both paperback and hardback issues of the first impression were published on 26 June 1997. Only 500 copies of the first printing of Philosopher’s Stone were issued in hardback, of which it is thought around 300 were sold to libraries and schools. The publisher has stated “I think the assumption in 1997 would have been that you would sell 500 hardcovers of any good book to public libraries so that edition would be aimed at them. The general edition for the market would be a paperback” (Errington, p. 4). Identifying libraries as the intended buyers of this issue explains the lack of a dust jacket (Errington states a jacket “was simply not required by libraries”). The small number of copies not accessioned by libraries explains the scarcity of this issue, and why copies in collectible condition are rare. This copy, bearing a price sticker from W. H. Smith on the rear cover, identifies it as one of a small number sold on the high street.

Fabricated by silversmith Mitchell Nugent, this is a custom sterling silver skull used as set dressing for <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=David+Bowie&amp;pfilters.dateRange=upcoming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">David Bowie</a>’s lair, as Jareth the Goblin King in Jim Henson’s cult classic musical fantasy,&nbsp;Labyrinth&nbsp;(1986).<ul><li>Mitchell Nugent (American, 1948-1993).</li><li>Used as custom set dressing for David Bowie as the Goblin King 'Jareth' in the film Labyrinth.</li><li>Orb is not fixed.</li><li>Engraved internally and on all sided, including lizard motif inside and on bottom of skull.</li><li>Includes small cabochon diamonds on inside of skull.</li></ul> Fabricated by silversmith Mitchell Nugent and featuring most prominently in the ‘Magic Dance’ song sequence, the present lot is a custom sterling silver skull for David Bowie’s lair as Jareth the Goblin King in Jim Henson’s cult classic musical fantasy,&nbsp;Labyrinth&nbsp;(1986). This production-used prop features detailed engravings and hinged cranium that opens to reveal a crystal orb and a miniature lizard carved into the underside of the hinged element. Silversmith Mitchell Nugent was born in New York City in 1948 and by 1968, Nugent was a full-fledged hippie travelling the world until settling in Wales in 1971. It was in Wales that Nugent decided to teach himself the art of silversmithing and jewelry making—eventually developing his signature design aesthetic comprised of baroque carvings of fantastical creatures. Ranging from delicate butterflies with scaled wings to glass-eyed fish to weaponry and amulets, Nugent’s work eventually allowed him to rent a small studio in Camden Town in 1980. A few years later, the crew working on Jim Henson’s&nbsp;Labyrinth&nbsp;would stumble upon Nugent’s studio and offer him his first big break—a commission to produce hero props for David Bowie’s character in the upcoming fantasy feature. Nugent accepted the commission to create several custom props for Jareth the Goblin King, of which this is one.

France ocean liner in October 1971.</li><li>The letter comes with two Plaza Hotel envelopes that George has addressed to Pattie at Friar Park in Henley-On-Thames and an Apple New York envelope, postmarked 1st November that has George has also addressed to Pattie.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> In the letter, George describes his journey aboard The S. S. France as being not as good as the QE2 writing:‘More straights in Tuxedos and not as many things to do, I read a lot in the cabin.’ He discusses editing the ‘Concert for Bangladesh’ for television, he mentions that Bob [Dylan] would be coming to look at his part in the film and that Ravi will arrive later the same day to look at his performance in the film. George goes on to complain of a wrangle over the cover artwork for the album box set of ‘The Concert for Bangladesh’, with Harrison resolute in his preference for a haunting photo of a malnourished child on the front and jokes that the delay has brought about the near simultaneous release of Ravi Shankar’s ‘Raga’, ‘The Concert for Bangladesh’ and Paul McCartney’s ‘Wild Life’, all coming in the same month! The letter has been transcribed exactly how George has written it. All of George’s grammatical errors and incorrect usage of capital letters have been retained. It reads as follows: ‘(212) PL 9.3000 ROOM 601Monday EveningDear Pattie,Hello, Hope you are O.K. I tried to call you when I got here but there was no Greg in the Lodge – can you call me through Apple at ABKCO or the Plaza to say hello to Hubby! It’s a drag not being able to speak to you. George Harrison Handwritten Letter To Pattie Boyd

A four page handwritten <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/books-&amp;-manuscripts/book?Book%20Subject=Letters&amp;Book%20Subject=Manuscripts%252C%2520Letters%252C%2520Documents&amp;Book%20Subject=Manuscripts%252C%2520Letters%252C%2520Documents%252C%2520Ephemera" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">letter</a> in <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=john%20lennon&amp;tab=objects&amp;sortBy=bsp_dotcom_prod_en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">John Lennon</a>’s hand to his cousin Liela Birch (Harvey). <ul><li>John Lennon (English).</li><li>The letter is on four pages of yellow palm tree letterhead&nbsp;</li><li>The letter is written in black pen and was penned in John and Yoko’s home in the Dakota building, New York. </li><li>John has written ‘later on Jan 79’ in the top right corner of the first page. </li><li>He has also added a drawing of a man waiving from behind a palm tree. </li><li>On page two he has drawn two pyramids, a sun and a camel. </li><li>On page four he has drawn an image of a man waving from behind a palm tree and a facial doodle of himself.</li></ul> The letter itself has fantastic content including John reminiscing about childhood holidays, sharing news of his young son, Sean, and revealing his trepidation about a potential visit to Aunt Mimi Smith in England. Lennon never returned to the United Kingdom, but, as this letter indicates, he did find his way to Egypt with his wife Yoko Ono for a planned ‘archaeological dig’ arranged by art collector and family friend Sam Green. The proposed excavation never happened, but Lennon, an ardent history buff, spent several days sightseeing and exploring attractions like the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Step Pyramid of Djoser where he explored the underground chambers. Yoko Ono referred to her Egyptian trip with Lennon in her 1984 song ‘Let Me Count the Ways’.&nbsp;This letter was included as part of the 2012 book The John Lennon Letters, a collection of almost 300 letters and postcards that was edited and annotated by Hunter Davies whose 1968 authorized biography The Beatles was published to great acclaim. The letter is referred to on page 349 with Davies writing the following:&nbsp;‘In January 1979, John wrote one of his longest letters to his cousin Liela. In contrast to his letters to Derek Taylor, there is no wordplay, no silly jokes, no obscenities. He has just celebrated Christmas, following on from Thanksgiving, and is feeling nostalgic for his boyhood Christmases in England, painting a rather poignant picture of the games they played as children and the songs they sang. Among other things, he tells her he is a Zen Pagan, moans a bit about Aunt Mimi and Cousin Stanley, and raves about how beautiful Sean is. He also comments on Liela getting upset over something he is supposed to have said in a newspaper. It must have been an old interview, as in theory John was still in retirement. The remarks about Egypt refer to Liela personally, as she had been born there. The reference to ‘Russian affair’ is not clear, but it can perhaps be assumed that it was something predicted for her in a tarot card reading.’.&nbsp;The letter reads as follows:&nbsp;‘Dear Leila (sic), It’s snowing — outside the window in Central Park — I can see the Plaza Hotel across the way — it’s beautiful. I’m exhausted (still) after Xmas/New Year — they even have a thing called Thanksgiving a few weeks before Xmas (by the way I’m a Pagan — a Zen Pagan to be precise — but that’s another story!) It looks as if we got our wires crossed on the ‘newspaper story’ — ie. Mimi (who else!) told me you were upset about something I said (supposed to have said) in the newspaper about myself — anyway enuff of that — it’s obviously nothing — so let’s forget that which we cannot remember anyway! I don’t know why you were surprised by what I wrote you about your ‘Russian Affair’ — I thought I’d made it clear to you that the words were from a TAROT CARD READER — ie: I told him your story / birthdate etc — the words came through him — I just wrote down his prediction (whatever) re: your situation! — See? — so don’t shoot the bearer of news!! Sean is a beautiful wise 3 yr old (born Oct. 9! — in case you didn’t know) — what a handful one is — I don’t know how you manage all yours — well done! A <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/books-&amp;-manuscripts/book?locale=en&amp;Book%20Type=Signed%2520and%2520Inscribed" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">signed</a> letter from <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Sylvia%20Plath&amp;tab=objects&amp;sortBy=bsp_dotcom_prod_en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Sylvia Plath</a> to her mother.<ul><li>Sylvia Plath (American).</li><li>One leaf, recto and verso, on light blue Smith College stationery.</li><li>Framed with contemporaneous black-and-white photograph of Plath.</li></ul> Sylvia Plath (1932–63) matriculated at Smith College in the fall of 1950, and quickly formed a tight bond with her roommate, Marcia Brown (1932–2012). In the winter of 1951, Plath and Brown visited the latter's maternal aunt, Harriet Bosworth, in Francestown, New Hampshire, a trip that clearly enthralled Plath, who writes in the first paragraph, "It is now midnight Sunday night and I have gotten back from the nicest weekend I ever had!" She continues: "Marcia and I got up at 10 and had a lovely liesurely [sic] breakfast in the front living room of the dear little house. Then we went out into the most beautiful world imagineable [sic]! Snow had fallen in a fine powder last night, and the sun was out in a snow-blue sky. A white-New-England church is so lovely — and it was one of those heavenly dry-cold days, with blinding sun and snow and sharp blue shadows. The air was swimmingly blue." Plath goes on to recount skiing for the first time — "I have never been so thrilled in my life!" — and while noting "the modest little gently rolling hill… was not Sun Valley," stated that, "Skiing, if you can do it well, must be pretty close to feeling like God." She closes with, "to bed &amp; my six hour day tomorrow — your happy girl, Sylvia." Plath and Brown maintained their close friendship until Sylvia's suicide in 1963. Brown is mentioned multiple times in Plath's journals, and the poet sent her more than 20 letters, all of which are currently housed in the Sylvia Plath Collection at Smith. Plath also incorporated Brown into two poems, the first being "The Babysitters" (1961), which recounts a summer both girls worked as nannies in Swampscott, Massachusetts, and the second an unpublished pieced titled "Marcia," in which Plath writes, "she will be always as now: cheeks appleshining translucent from soapandwater scrubbing. she will be always sight of market in the morning: red cheek of beet and radish squashyellow hair and mirrored purpleblack of eggplant eye laced with celerysilver lashes, vegetable and vital."

A <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Keith%20Haring&amp;tab=objects&amp;sortBy=bsp_dotcom_prod_en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Keith Haring</a> illustrated <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=calendar&amp;tab=objects&amp;sortBy=bsp_dotcom_prod_en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">calendar</a> designed by Haring just months before his passing in February, 1990.<ul><li>After Keith Haring (American, 1958-1990).</li><li>The calendar was sold in 1989 and 1990 at Haring's Pop Shop in New York City.</li><li>Includes 20 illustrations by the artist.</li><li>Lithographic calendar, 18 pages.</li><li>Spiral bound.</li><li>Unsigned from an edition of unknown size.</li></ul> One of the last known Keith Haring Pop Shop collectibles designed by Haring during his lifetime. Haring passed less than a year after this calendar was published (calendar spans May 1989 through December 1990). In 1986, New York artist Keith Haring opened the Pop Shop in downtown Manhattan. Haring saw the Pop Shop as an extension of his work, a fun boutique where his art could be accessible to everyone. For nearly twenty years, the shop continued to be a downtown attraction with floor-to-ceiling murals and affordable clothing and gift items all featuring Keith Haring's unique icons. In September, 2005, the Pop Shop finally closed its doors to the public. Keith Haring's work continues to be displayed around the world at galleries and museums and in public spaces.

Travell (1901-1997) was a New York physician was and medical researcher. She was appointed the personal physician to President John F. Kennedy in 1961. She graduated from Wellesley College and Cornell University Medical College. She was the first female doctor to be the personal physician to a sitting United States president and retained that post until March,1965. Her specialty was treating muscular pain. Kennedy's injuries from WW II were the beginnings of his back pain problems. She helped him in the late 1950s so much that he chose her as his personal physician while he was in the White House. The photo is accompanied by a small typed note on White House stationery signed by Tavell which explains that this photo was taken when the Kennedys were in Mexico at the end of June, 1962.

Lurie had a role in the Basquiat film Downtown 81 and starred in Jim Jarmusch’s pioneering independent films&nbsp;Stranger Than Paradise&nbsp;and&nbsp;Down by Law. His jazz-punk band&nbsp;The Lounge Lizards&nbsp;were at the forefront of the late-1970s New York ‘No-wave’ music scene. At its founding, the band consisted of John Lurie and Evan Lurie, guitarist&nbsp;Arto Lindsay, bassist Steve Piccolo, and percussionist&nbsp;Anton Fier. Though partly inspired by jazz, John Lurie said he used guitarists in the band "to foil the music when it gets too jazzlike.”

"One photo from the Open Door that night has since become a jazz icon. It shows Parker standing out front, wearing a light suit, two-toned loafers, his arms thrust forward, blowing what appears to be his famous King brass alto saxophone. To Parker's left is Monk on upright piano, microphone slung over the instrument. Two drinking glasses and a dinner plate perched on top. At Monk's right is Mingus, slouched over his bass. Along the back wall is Mr. Haynes, his eyes fixed on his bandmates [...] It has since been called by many 'the greatest photo in jazz.'" Robert Parent (1923-1987) was one of the pioneers of jazz photography. He combined a keen eye and appreciation for his subjects with a technical know-how that allowed him to capture images that eluded lesser practitioners. Determined not to disrupt performances, he developed a technique that became known as "available light photography," which allowed him to work in the dark environments of clubs and theaters. Using his Pressman Speed Graphic camera, Parent was able to quietly snap pictures without disturbing the performers, a technique on display in this iconic image. Parent had received a tip that Parker might be sitting in with Monk's trio, and his photos from that night (the only known of this event) capture the only time these four giants would play together. This photo would soon appear in LIFE, but over the decades has since gone on to legendary status, perfectly capturing the improvisational, intimate, and collaborative nature of jazz. It was most recently the subject of a 2019 New York Times article by Peter Facini entitled "Is This the Greatest Photo in Jazz History?" During his life, Parent's images appeared regularly in Downbeat and Metronome as well as more mainstream books and publications. He also provided images for numerous album covers (designing many himself) for labels like Mingus's Debut. His photos are among the most influential of postwar jazz, capturing it at the height of its cultural and artistic importance. A rare and defining photograph.

An original transcript from <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Stephen%20Hawking&amp;tab=objects&amp;sortBy=bsp_dotcom_prod_en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Stephen Hawking</a>'s Harvard University lecture series A Short History of the Universe, and a <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/books-&amp;-manuscripts/book/first-edition?locale=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">first edition</a> of A Brief History of Time.<ul><li>Sold as a set of 3: 1 transcript, 1 letter, and one book.</li><li>Stephen W. Hawking (English).</li><li>A Brief History of Time: United Kingdom: Bantam, 1988.</li><li>Transcript is bound in cardboard wrappers with three ties, and printed on 1980s ream printer paper. </li></ul> The transcript is unrecorded and only Cambridge University have a similar copy according to their records. The transcript was sent to Russia (potentially to a fellow research fellow), but was stopped at customs. This is explained to a colleague in the included letter from Francis J M Turner of Hawking’s Cambridge College, Magdalene. The letter is dated 23rd April 1988. The transcript opens with the paragraph from Hawking, ‘I’m going to give this course of lectures with the help of a computer, and a speech synthesizer. You must forgive it the american accent: I have not been able to teach it proper English’. The layout of the transcript differs from the chapters within the published first edition of A Brief History of Time which accompanies the transcript. The lectures cover similar topics as the first edition, specifically ‘Black Holes Ain’t So Black’, ‘The Expanding Universe’ and ‘The Origin and Fate of the Universe’. Interestingly, Chapter 10 and 11 of A Brief History of Time are covered in the lectures under the heading of ‘The Theory of Everything’. The latter title being what many considered as Hawking’s ‘watered-down’ version of A Brief History of Time. What is evident from the transcript is the range of ideas found in A Brief History of Time, as well as The Theory of Everything and The Universe in a Nutshell. Coupled with this, the transcript certainly is the first time these ideas appeared in print and its academic importance in the generation of Hawking’s ideas about black holes, matter and the expansion of the Universe. A truly unique item and something rarely available outside an academic collection, aside a true first edition, first printing of Hawking’s masterpiece.

The proof is lighter in color to the final dust wrapper artwork finally used by Cape. The Keith Haring Foundation acknowledges this via their website as Haring’s 1st solo exhibition. Keith Haring (American, 1958–1990), a Neo-Pop and Graffiti artist, had a short but prolific career centered on a vision to unite “high art,” urban aesthetics, and public spaces using humorous, irreverent, and poignant works. Born in Pennsylvania, Haring attended the Ivy School of Art in Pittsburgh for two years, planning to become a commercial artist. He found this path unsatisfying, and instead chose to study at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he met fellow artists Jean Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf. Haring immersed himself in the culture of the city’s streets and clubs, and, in 1980, began covering the blank billboards on subway station walls with his Subway drawings in chalk. Haring’s bold public art attracted the attention of several galleries, and, by the early 1980s, he was painting Neo-Pop works and large murals full time. In an effort to make his art widely accessible, Haring opened the Pop Shop in 1986 in downtown New York, selling commercial items adorned with his signature, cartoonish imagery. Haring combined graffiti, hip-hop, and urban aesthetics, frequently depicting animals, figures, commercial icons, sexual imagery, and childlike motifs in pieces that were both playful and concerned with social issues. His work became increasingly confrontational following his 1987 diagnosis of AIDS. Haring resolved to work harder than ever in his remaining years, creating pieces with a fervent speed and devoting his art to social action in addition to his personal expression. In 1989, he established the Keith Haring Foundation, whose goal is to promote art programs and public spaces for children, and to raise awareness about AIDS. He died on February 16, 1990 in New York at the age of 31. In addition to hundreds of exhibitions held during his lifetime, Haring has been the subject of numerous retrospectives in New York, San Francisco, Paris, Tokyo, and Berlin since his death.

Merck’s objected, meaning Hirst withdrawing it as an artwork of wallpaper but had already plastered the restaurant with silver and gold versions, which remained. Later, for a sale in 2004, limited editions of the wallpaper were produced. This, the original, is rare thus. Auction catalog is complete with the full set of stickers intact. In this auction, Hirst sold the art work effects from the Pharmacy Bar and Restaurant in Notting Hill, London.

The original artwork for the 1974 <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Elton%20John&amp;tab=objects&amp;sortBy=bsp_dotcom_prod_en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Elton John</a> album The Bitch Is Back, which was eventually released as Caribou.&nbsp;<ul><li>From the collection of designer/art director/photographer Mike Ross, who was responsible for album covers by many artists including Paul McCartney, Elton John, The Police and Sting.</li><li>This artwork was presented to Elton John in the Rocket Records office in Wardour Street, London in late 1973 or early 1974. </li><li>The photo used to make the sketch was the same image as the one that was used on the front of the Honky Chateau cover. </li><li>If you pull up a piece of card within the sleeve, Elton sticks his tongue out to lick the lollipop whilst his eyes are closed. </li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> This original artwork idea got a good reaction from Elton and a few laughs, but wasn’t taken seriously as a final contender for the finished sleeve of the album. The lettering for the proposed title, The Bitch is Back, was written by hand using an actual red lipstick that was hastily borrowed from one of the girls in the Rocket office. The heart-shaped glasses and lollipop were intentional visual references to Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Lolita’.

Warhol became the Velvet Underground’s manager in 1966 after seeing them perform in Greenwich Village and then brought German born singer Nico to the table. Warhol designed the cover as a self standing artwork and this is marked by Warhol’s very noticeable printed hand signature. In dissociating the concept of the artwork from the band itself and achieving wide distribution, Warhol created something revolutionary in nature. Says Warhol scholar Paul Marechal, “After sublimating an everyday object, he then reintroduced it into daily life through a vehicle accessible to all, the record. Perhaps Warhol wanted to be as well-known as Coca-Cola.” The original album cover allowed fans to peel back the banana skin as a sticker, revealing the fruit of a nude-colored banana underneath. The sexually-charged effect was challenging for manufacturers to first pull off (the time it took to perfect the peel was partly the reason the album’s original release was delayed), but MGM deemed it necessary, since Warhol’s visual presence opened unprecedented doors.

An adaptation of The Hobbit, dramatized and produced by Humphrey Carpenter, was staged by New College Choir School in the late 1960s. Tolkien provided autographs for the actors but neglected the technical crew. Tolkien offers to send some 'stick-in autographs" to Mr. Jackson, technical director of Humphrey Carpenter's musical adaptation of The Hobbit at the end of 1967, who was "left out" of an autographing session Tolkien. The author then apologizes to "the back-room boys of the drama" noting their "necessary, indeed very important, functions". He explains that his eldest son, John Tolkien Jr, “used to perform the same functions at his school". Tolkien also signed copies of the program for the performance for Mr. Jackson and the children.

The work features Haring’s iconic 'Crawling Baby' and printed figurative patterns on the reverse. The work was gifted by Haring to his close personal friend, the downtown art scene luminary, Maripol, and obtained directly from the former.

The recipient of the signature was a guest of the Daily Sketch who met Ali in their hospitality suite where it was signed. The signature has been verified as genuine by Shawn Anderson who is the leading Ali expert.

A <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/collectibles/vintage-poster/music" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">concert poster</a> advertising a performance by <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=The%20Beatles&amp;tab=objects&amp;sortBy=bsp_dotcom_prod_en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The Beatles</a> at the Town Hall Ballroom, Abergavenny.<ul><li>The concert took place on the 22nd June 1963 and were supported by local band The Fabulous Fortunes.</li><li>The poster also advertises other events that took place at the ballroom in May and June.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> This was to be The Beatles’ only performance in Abergavenny. They were booked by local promoter Eddie Tattersall who had agreed a fee of £250 with Brian Epstein. The concert was advertised as 7.30pm to 11.45pm but The Beatles were late taking the stage because of John Lennon’s appearance on Juke Box Jury earlier in the day. The show had been recorded at London’s BBC studios, however, filming ended at 9.15pm. Following this, John was driven to Battersea Helipad from where he took a chartered helicopter flight to Wales. He landed at Abergavenny’s Pen-y-pound football ground at 9.50pm and was driven straight to the Town Hall. The rest of The Beatles had arrived earlier in the day and had been invited to a civic reception given by the Mayor and Mayoress of Abergavenny, Councillor and Mrs J.F. Thurston. The Beatles took to the stage at 10.30pm where they performed in front of around 600 fans. After the concert, all four Beatles signed autographs which were sold to fans for threepence each, with proceeds going to the local branch of the Freedom From Hunger Campaign.&nbsp;

The self-proclaimed “original NYC street photographer” used his bold personality and beat-up Minolta to get behind-the-scenes access to groups like the Beastie Boys and Run DMC, with whom he toured, and to such downtown artists as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, to name only a handful of his subjects. Publications, clothing, and lifestyle brands took notice of his intimate, candid color and black-and-white shots, and commissions for the New York Times and Puma, among many others, followed. From his base in Greenwich Village, Powell continues to roam the streets, documenting his city through the people who call it home. From a young age Haring enjoyed drawing, especially Disney characters and other cartoons. He initially wanted to become a commercial artist but after a year at the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh, Haring dropped, moved to New York City and enrolled in the School of Visual Arts (SVA). Haring immediately felt connected to the thriving alternative arts scene happening downtown in the late 1970s and became friends with&nbsp;Jean-Michel Basquiat&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kenny Scharf. Haring’s first major works were his subway drawings. Haring produced a large number of these public works between 1980 and 1985, integrating his motifs outlined figures into everyday public space in a way that directly engaged its viewers. Haring's 1st solo exhibition was held at Westbeth Painters Space in 1981 and a celebrated show debuted at the historic Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York the following year. Throughout the 1980s, Haring was committed to democratizing the art experience and along with paintings, he also created theater sets, billboards, murals, advertising campaigns and even a line of Swatch watches. In 1986 he opened the Pop Shop in SoHo, selling apparel, posters and toys bearing his drawings. This was a controversial move, as many galleries criticized Haring for “de-valuing” the art object while others, such as&nbsp;Andy Warhol, championed Haring’s insistence on making art accessible and affordable. Pop Shop was highly influential to contemporary crossovers of art and merchandise that are now so dominant, as in the work of&nbsp;Jeff Koons,&nbsp;Yayoi Kusama,&nbsp;KAWS and&nbsp;Takashi Murakami. In addition to this ideology of accessibility, Haring was also very socially engaged and used his striking imagery to promote awareness of various political and social campaigns. His many notable public works included a mural on the western side of the Berlin Wall, the&nbsp;Crack is Wack&nbsp;mural in New York, and a mural for the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty in 1986. Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988 and used his presence in the arts community to raise awareness of the crisis. In 1989, a year before his death, he established the Keith Haring Foundation, whose mission is to raise funds for AIDS organizations and children’s literacy and arts programs. Since his death in 1990, Haring has become one of the most widely-recognized and celebrated artists of the 20th century. Obsessed with celebrity, consumer culture, and mechanical reproduction, Pop Art king, Andy Warhol created some of the 20th century’s most iconic images. Warhol was widely influenced by popular &amp; consumer culture, with this being evident in some of his most famous works: 32 Campbell's soup cans, Brillo pad box sculptures, and portraits of Marilyn Monroe &amp; Mick Jagger, for example. Rejecting the standard painting and sculpting modes of his era, Warhol embraced silk-screen printmaking to achieve his characteristic hard edges and flat areas of color. The artist mentored Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat and continues to influence contemporary art around the world: His most bold successors include Richard Prince, Takashi Murakami, and Jeff Koons. Warhol has been the subject of exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, and Centre Pompidou, among other institutions.
