Of these, 2,255 were bound and sold at 25 shillings, 950 were destroyed by the publisher and the remaining were gratis copies. It is possible that the 950 discarded sets of sheets remained unsold because of the price, which Joyce believed was too high. "'A way alone aloved alost along the…' If Finnegans Wake is a key book, it is a key which needs a key" (Connolly). "His work is enriched by such large resources of invention and allusion that its total effect is infinite variety" (Harry Levin).

An Inquiry Into the Authenticity of Various Pictures and Prints...of Shakespeare

Smith on the title verso; Tales, third printing with three-line copyright.</li><li>Bound in three quarter blue morocco gilt, t.e.g., by Riviere &amp; Son.</li></ul> Students all over the world know of the title poem, and many know others as well: "The Conqueror Worm," "Eulalie," "Leonore," "To Helen," etc. "The most important volume of poetry that had been issued up to that time in America..." —Grolier American 56 A choice set of the major books published during Poe’s lifetime, BAL’s “reissue B,” issued by Wiley and Putnam in April 1846, comprising the first edition sheets of The Raven and The Tales in either second or third printing (here in BAL’s third printing, distinguishable by the three-line copyright notice). BAL notes that “impressions from the plates of several pages vary in an anomalous way. For instance, the first three letters of the last three lines of p. 160 appear both battered and intact within the three printings.” This copy has slight battering to “I” and “o” on p. 160, while the “v” is intact. The “E” in the running head on p. 187 is broken here (as in most copies of all printings. BAL cautions, “It is possible that the printings designated below as second and third are in fact two states of the same printing.” This copy is textually complete in both books, including the integral ads; the volume has been rebound without the separate gatherings of advertisements that followed the text.

The Raven and Other Poems

Basquiat executed this one line poem circa 1982 while living with a noted Gray bandmate.<ul><li>Single page removed from notebook.</li><li>The line reads: "SOME BORING HARBOR / CAMERAS MILD SUSPENCE."</li><li>Ink on paper.</li><li>Obtained directly from a prominent Basquiat Gray band member whose typewritten prose appears on the reverse.</li><li>Accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from the aforementioned.</li></ul> Here, Basquiat begins to play with the idea of beginning a screenplay, with the work’s empty space and liner notes leaving us to surreally fill in the blanks. The work further echoes Basquiat’s one-line street poems during his (earlier) SAMO period and famed notebook entries, not to mention his interest in beat poetry and fragmented prose scenarios mirroring the style and influence of William S. Burroughs. During the very early part of his career, Basquiat also experimented with screenwriting.

Handwritten One Line Poem

A signed copy of L'Alouette.<ul><li>Joan Miró (Spanish).</li><li>Text by René Char (French).</li><li>Paris: GLM, 1954.</li><li>Small oblong quarto.</li><li>One leaf, unfolded.</li><li>Signed by the author and the artist on the verso.</li><li>Part of a limited edition, one of 30 copies hand-colored by Miró, from a total edition of 100.</li><li>Lithograph heightened with watercolor, pastel and India ink on wove paper.</li></ul>&nbsp;One of 30 copies with original hand-coloring by Miró. This example has extensive additions, with a blue background to the text, the artist’s fingerprints in red and black, ink line drawings to the lithograph, as well as brightly colored dots to the justification. The artist decorated the thirty examples with different illustrations, making them each unique but retained some similar elements such as the red dots and line drawings. René Char and Joan Miró had met during the Surrealist period, but their friendship dated from the post-war years when Miró returned to France. L'Alouette is their third collaborative work. A notably scarce work even for unsigned examples both on the market and institutionally. There are only two copies in libraries, at Yale University and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.

A finely bound and illustrated copy of La Reine Morte.<ul><li>Henry de Montherlant (French, 1895-1972).</li><li>Illustrated by V. Stuyvaert.</li><li>Bound by Jacques Blanchet.</li><li>Paris: Aux depens d'un groupe de bibliophiles, 1944.</li><li>Large quarto.</li><li>Limited to 337 copies, 300 numbered copies on Velin de Lana, this being copy #260.</li><li>Bound in full deep purple morocco, title and author gilt to spine, front cover with muli-color morocco onlays depicting the queen in front of a fireplace and mirror, 22 karat gold leather doublures with red and yellow morocco triangle inlays, cloth brocade endpapers, top edge goffered tinted yellow with gilt crowns, others uncut as issued, housed in a matching morocco edged red suede open-ended slipcase, slipcase lined with purple felt.</li></ul> Tipped to one of the front endpapers is an explanation in French of the binding by Blanchet, here translated in English: “The purplish color of this morocco leather expresses that there is drama in Portugal. The mosaic represents the Queen in a gesture of worry singing that she is being spied on. The leather guards, through their shapes and colors, demonstrate the main outcomes of this story. Passion for red triangles and complicity for yellow ones. Adjusted to the gold leather (22 karats), the whole reveals the intriguing life of these royal characters. Silks complete the adornment of the palaces of yesteryear.” Jacques Blanchet was born in 1915. It is not clear with whom he studied in Montreal, but in 1948 he received a grant from the Quebec government to study bookbinding in France and Italy. He spent a year abroad. Upon his return, a traveling exhibition throughout Canada was organized. His bindings are picturesque as was the taste in the 1940s and '50s. He wrote a small book titled Essaie sur la Reliure et les Relieurs au XXeS.

The Works of Edgar Allan Poe

A finely bound copy of The Golden Treasury.<ul><li>Francis Turner Palgrave (British, 1824-1897).</li><li>London: Macmillan &amp; Co., 1908.</li><li>Bound in full vellucent vellum binding, covers and spine ruled in gilt, title to spine incorporated in an interlaced art nouveau style, title also to the front cover with an image of Pan incorporated in the “G,” the balance of the title also incorporated in an interlaced floral art nouveau style, gilt dentelles, paper and vellum doublures, top edge gilt, others uncut, stamped Cedric Chivers Bath to the lower edge of the rear cover.</li></ul> Around 1903, Cedric Chivers of Bath, England, developed a remarkable method of decoration for the binding of books: the transparent vellum or “Vellucent” method. The process involved an artist painting on a super-thin surface medium, and a sheet of vellum, shaved to translucent thinness, was laid over it, with the now indivisible pieces bound over boards. For the first time in the history of the bibliopegistic art, the actual work of the artist, undiluted by a translation through the hands of a binding technician, was involved in the decoration of the book. Using the “Vellucent method” it was also possible to incorporate further embellishments such as mother-of-pearl and iridescent shell, and the like, all of which may be covered and permanently protected by the vellum. As The Graphic Arts and Crafts Year Book for 1908 wrote, “It is difficult indeed not to become enthusiastic over the idea of the gorgeous aspect of a wealthy booklover’s library of “Vellucent” bound books, which may become at the same time a cabinet of works of art, each one of his choice and rare volumes bearing an unique specimen of the book decorator’s skill, and embellished with the most varied and brilliant effects.”

Loves and Heroines of the Poets

A&nbsp;first edition of Zotti's annotated Divine Comedy, primarily designed for British women learning Italian and dedicated by the editor to three aristocratic women patrons.<ul><li>Sold as a set of 4.</li><li>Dante Alighieri (Italian).</li><li>Edited by Romualdo Zotti.</li><li>Essay by Johann Bernhard Merian.</li><li>London: R. Zotti, 1808, 1809.&nbsp;</li><li>Illustrated with frontispiece portrait of Dante in volume I.&nbsp;</li><li>Bound in contemporary full deep green goatskin, with green moiré silk endpapers, all edges gilt, gilt dentelles, green silk ribbon markers.&nbsp;</li></ul> In 1808, Dante's Divine Comedy was published for the first time in London in the original Italian; this work was one of two editions from that year, with no priority established (see Toynbee, 68). Zotti's was the first London-printed Divine Comedy with contextual commentary, and it was dedicated to three Englishwomen with an advanced knowledge of Italian: Augusta Fane, the Countess of Lonsdale; Frances Finch, third Countess of Dartmouth; and Mrs. Pilkington (Maria Elizabeth Gibbs). Their names also appear in the fourth volume's Nomi de' Signori Associati that is headed with the name of Queen Charlotte, and includes Signor Polidori, Margaret Mercer Elphinstone, John Kemble, the Misses Walpole and Charlotte Leveson Gower, Duchess of Beaufort. Zotti was the author of a popular Italian grammar and a former teacher of Italian to English girls; among the 119 women who made up the vast majority of the list, many are unmarried and likely include some number of Zotti's pupils. The preface suggests that the three dedicatees typified Zotti's intended readership: not scholars, but the well-educated, curious and cosmopolitan British reading public, primarily female, in need of linguistic help and desiring some historical and cultural context. The readers he anticipates are no experts, but neither will they be unfamiliar with Dante. It was essentially a schoolteacher's Dante: basic in some respects, inaccurate in others, but profoundly useful to that stratum of English society educated enough to read it, and it contributed significantly to the growing English familiarity with Dante in Romantic circles and among women in particular.

Besides "Daddy" and "Lady Lazarus" (in the October 1963 issue of THE REVIEW), highlights include nine appearances in The New Yorker, eight of which were published during her lifetime including the poems "Tulips (1962)," "Mussel Hunter at Rock Harbor (1958)" and "A Winter's Tale (1959)"; two poems in the June 1958 issue of The London Magazine ("Spinster" and "Black Rook in Rainy Weather"), that also includes Albert Camus' Nobel Prize acceptance speech; the posthumously published short story, "Johnny Panic and The Bible of Dreams" in the September 1968 issue of The Atlantic, nine years before it would be used as the title for a collection of Plath's short stories; and one posthumous appearance in a 1965 issue of Mademoiselle ("November Graveyard"), the magazine where she spent a month as guest editor after her third year of college and which provided many of the experiences she would later draw inspiration from while writing The Bell Jar. The earliest appearance is in the January 1957 issue of Poetry, which includes six poems, and the latest appearance is in Works In Progress No. 2, 1971, which includes four poems and a short story. An impressive collection of periodicals featuring appearances by one of the greatest American poets of the twentieth century, spanning Plath's start as a writer through her tragic death and early posthumous publications.

Proof copies of the first separate edition of the poem A Considerable Speck.&nbsp;<ul><li>Sold as a set of 2&nbsp;single folio sheets.</li><li>Includes one uncorrected page proof of the 33-line poem, without the printed title page, and with printer’s manuscript corrections and directions in red ink; and one final proof copy, with "Original Proof" printed on title-page.</li><li>Robert Frost (American).</li><li>Both copies are uncut on cream woven paper watermarked "HANDMADE”.</li><li>Laid in a custom green cloth chemise.</li></ul> Laid in is a photocopy of the handbill titled “The Colonial Society of Massachusetts” detailing the poem’s history: “This poem was written and delivered by Robert Frost at the Annual Dinner on November twenty-first, 1939. It has been printed by Mr. Dard Hunter, Jr. from the first font of type that he has cut and cast himself, and is one of the first pieces of printing. It is on hand-made paper, made by him and his father, an authority on paper, with whom he is associated at the Dard Hunter Paper Museum at Massachusetts Institute of Technology....” A Considerable Speck was first printed in the Atlantic Monthly in July, 1939. The first separate edition consisted of fewer than 100 copies, according to Crane.

A Considerable Speck

A typescript of 25 love poems written to John Steinbeck's wife Gwendolyn Conger Steinbeck.<ul><li>John Steinbeck (American).</li><li>Transcribed by Gwendolyn Conger Steinbeck.</li><li>Bound with a cover Typed Letter Signed, 10/30/69, from Shirley McCurry's secretarial service, to Burgess Meredith, saying: "Dear Mr. Meredith, Gwyn [Steinbeck] asked that we forward the enclosed poems to you. She will send the material to fill in the blanks as soon as she is able to decipher it ... "</li></ul> These are Gwyn's own transcriptions of the love poems written to her by Steinbeck, sent to their good friend Burgess Meredith. It is not clear whether the manuscripts have survived, although Jackson Benson (p. 57) states of the little poetry which Steinbeck wrote, "there is a series of love poems written to his second wife, Gwyn, which has also survived."

Whitman continued to revise and add to the text until his death in 1892. This, the first printing of the third edition, marks the greatest single leap in the evolution of the text, with more than 100 poems added to the original work. It includes the first appearance of the "Calamus" sequence, considered by many to be Whitman's clearest expression in print of his views on homoerotic love. "The edition is Whitman's most famous after the first and contains some of his greatest poems, including (using final titles) "Starting from Paumanok" and "Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking." The first of these is a more literal rendering of the spiritual autobiography in "Song of Myself" ("paumanok" is the American Indian term for "fish-shaped," referring to Long Island). The second was originally titled "A Child's Reminiscence" in the volume (it had yet another title in an 1859 magazine publication) because it is a meditation on lost innocence as it is realized at midlife ("A man, yet by these tears a little boy again"). The poet comes to realize that the freedom celebrated in his first edition and in "Song of Myself" is not altogether consistent with a way of coping with life's essential imperfection and that the duty of the poet is thus to sing of Love and Death, the common denominators of such imperfection. In a real sense, this poem about a man in crisis at midlife also suggests the crisis of poetry, that is, the power of its romantic illusions to overcome completely the fear of death" (ANB).
