The work was extravagantly costly as Dickens for the first time (and incidentally his last) used color in the title-page and etchings as he wanted to make the book a beautiful gift and to be a celebration of the Christmas spirit. After the initial success, Dickens continued the series throughout the 1840's, maintaining "the Carol" philosophy to "strike a sledgehammer blow" for the poor, uneducated, and repressed.

Harris would graduate college in 1964, becoming a reporter for the local newspaper in Waco, Texas where he covered the police beat. Harris would move to New York City in 1968, and left his job there at the Associated Press to begin work on his debut novel Black Sunday. After Black Sunday's moderate success, Harris would begin work on his second novel; Red Dragon. Research for this novel lasted throughout the 1970's during which Harris attended classes and spoke with agents of the FBI Behavioral Science Unit in Quantico, Virginia. When his father became terminally ill, Harris remained in a rural house for 18 months which helped him visualize his killer characters. Red Dragon would be the first depiction of the infamous Dr. Hannibal Lecter, the serial killer psychologist, who would become a mainstay in many of Harris' books, tying them together. Red Dragon saw much more success than Black Sunday, Stephen King naming it the "best popular novel to be published in America since The Godfather". It's critical success would inspire a sequel in 1988, Silence of the Lambs. Silence of the Lambs is by far Harris' most successful novel and best known installment in the series, selling over 10 million copies and spawning one of the great American horror films, which earned "the Big Five" Academy Awards in 1991. While Red Dragon followed a hardened FBI investigator, Silence of the Lambs follows trainee Clarice Starling as she pursues the serial killer "Buffalo Bill" who turns to Dr. Hannibal Lecter for help in the case. Hannibal would release to success, spawning a film adaptation in 2001 and was initially intended to be the final entry in the series. However, Harris would release a prequel to the series, Hannibal Rising, which depicts Lecter's origins. This final novel would release to middling reviews, and it was later revealed that Harris wrote the novel under duress as he was threatened with losing the rights to Hannibal Lecter as a character if he didn't.

A set of signed, first United Kingdom editions, first printings of the His Dark Materials series.<ul><li>Sold as a set of 5 volumes.</li><li>Philip Pullman (English).</li><li>His Dark Materials: Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass, Lyra's Oxford, Once Upon A Time In The North</li><li>London: Scholastic Press/ David Fickling Books, 1995-2008.&nbsp;</li><li>Octavos/Twelvemos.</li><li>Signed flat by Philip Pullman in Volume 1 on a bookplate adhesively attached to the copyright page, and in Volumes 2, 3, 4, and 5 on the title page.</li><li>Volume 4 contains a map attached to page 16 and several engravings.</li><li>Volume 5 contains several engravings, a loose page of "Wind Compass" punchouts, and a loose "Peril of the Pole" poster both contained in a pocket on the rear pastedown.</li><li>Volume 1 has a dark purple spine with white and light yellow lettering.</li><li>Volume 2 has a green spine with white and light yellow lettering.</li><li>Volume 3 has an orange spine with white and light yellow lettering.</li><li>Volume 4 has a red cloth spine with black lettering.</li><li>Volume 5 has a navy blue cloth spine with dark grey lettering.</li><li>Only Volumes 1, 2, and 3 have dust jackets.</li></ul> His Dark Materials was originally published as a 3-volume trilogy consisting of Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass, and first published from 1995-2000. The series itself, while marketed as a young-adult series, was written with no particular audience in mind, with elements of fantasy and science-fiction coming together in a tale which explores physics, philosophy, and theology. Outside of the pages, the series is known for Philip Pullman's statement that it is meant to commend humanity for what the poet John Milton coined "original sin" in his work 'Paradise Lost'. This and references to the Catholic church among other religious institutions has earned the series some controversy for "criticizing religion". Lyra's Oxford and Once Upon a Time in the North are both novellas meant to expand on the world of His Dark Materials. Lyra's Oxford takes place two years after The Amber Spyglass, when Lyra is 15 years old, and contains a variety of ephemera meant to be from the world. Once Upon a Time in the North is a prequel book written to show the first meeting between Iorek Byrnison and Lee Scoresby, two major characters and companions of Lyra throughout the original trilogy. Both novellas received glowing reviews upon release, and have since become core parts of the overall series.

This scarce deluxe edition features the author's signature, beautiful leather binding, and marbled boards. It is #41 of only 75 copies released. In 2007, two years after the novel's release, No Country For Old Men was adapted into a film of the same name starring Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, and Javier Bardem; the film was awarded four Oscars, including the award for Best Picture at the 80th Academy Awards. Between the success of No Country For Old Men and its film adaptation, McCarthy was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in fiction for his 2006 novel, The Road.
