The work was extravagantly costly as Dickens for the first time (and incidentally his last) used color in the title-page and etchings as he wanted to make the book a beautiful gift and to be a celebration of the Christmas spirit. After the initial success, Dickens continued the series throughout the 1840's, maintaining "the Carol" philosophy to "strike a sledgehammer blow" for the poor, uneducated, and repressed.

King, Alice Shepherd, and H. Granville Fell. In its prime the company experimented and specialized in highly skilled and beautiful bindings; this example being one of them. Chivers was born in Bath to a bookbinding family. After working for his father and various other binders he opened his own business in 1878, in the premises formerly occupied by Robert Rivière in Union Street, Bath. He subsequently moved to a double fronted shop at 39 Gay Street and then, as the business expanded, to a large house at Portway in Combe Park where the company operated until 1990.

An Inquiry Into the Authenticity of Various Pictures and Prints...of Shakespeare

A signed copy of L'Alouette.<ul><li>Joan Miró (Spanish).</li><li>Text by René Char (French).</li><li>Paris: GLM, 1954.</li><li>Small oblong quarto.</li><li>One leaf, unfolded.</li><li>Signed by the author and the artist on the verso.</li><li>Part of a limited edition, one of 30 copies hand-colored by Miró, from a total edition of 100.</li><li>Lithograph heightened with watercolor, pastel and India ink on wove paper.</li></ul>&nbsp;One of 30 copies with original hand-coloring by Miró. This example has extensive additions, with a blue background to the text, the artist’s fingerprints in red and black, ink line drawings to the lithograph, as well as brightly colored dots to the justification. The artist decorated the thirty examples with different illustrations, making them each unique but retained some similar elements such as the red dots and line drawings. René Char and Joan Miró had met during the Surrealist period, but their friendship dated from the post-war years when Miró returned to France. L'Alouette is their third collaborative work. A notably scarce work even for unsigned examples both on the market and institutionally. There are only two copies in libraries, at Yale University and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.

A limited edition of King Arthur, which has been signed by the illustrator.<ul><li>Sir Thomas Malory (English, died 1471).</li><li>Illustrated by Arthur Rackham.</li><li>London: Macmillan and Co., Ltd., 1917.</li><li>Illustrated with 16 tipped-in color plates (titled tissue guards after each plate) and 70 black and white illustrations.</li><li>Limited to 500 numbered copies signed by the illustrator Arthur Rackham, this being copy #243.</li><li>Bound in the original publisher's gilt stamped vellum, top edge gilt, others uncut, housed in a 1/2 gilt lettered &amp; decorated, blue morocco clamshell slipcase.</li></ul> Rackham received his commission for this superbly illustrated edition of Malory's masterpiece (first published by Caxton in 1485) while World War I still raged—a fact that perhaps explains his illustrations' generally dark view of the Matter of Britain. From Arthur's first unsheathing of Excalibur in the midst of fierce battle beneath overcast skies, to his tragic clash with his traitorous son on the dark fields of Camlann, Rackham confronts readers with combat, conflict and death. Despite (or perhaps even because of) this grim realism within a fantastic context, "Rackham's work became balm for wounded soldiers, as one mother wrote: ' ...When [my son] was getting better from very bad wounds... your illustrations of Books were his great joy and delight'" (Hamilton, 112).

Stuyvaert.</li><li>Bound by Jacques Blanchet.</li><li>Paris: Aux depens d'un groupe de bibliophiles, 1944.</li><li>Large quarto.</li><li>Limited to 337 copies, 300 numbered copies on Velin de Lana, this being copy #260.</li><li>Bound in full deep purple morocco, title and author gilt to spine, front cover with muli-color morocco onlays depicting the queen in front of a fireplace and mirror, 22 karat gold leather doublures with red and yellow morocco triangle inlays, cloth brocade endpapers, top edge goffered tinted yellow with gilt crowns, others uncut as issued, housed in a matching morocco edged red suede open-ended slipcase, slipcase lined with purple felt.</li></ul> Tipped to one of the front endpapers is an explanation in French of the binding by Blanchet, here translated in English: “The purplish color of this morocco leather expresses that there is drama in Portugal. The mosaic represents the Queen in a gesture of worry singing that she is being spied on. The leather guards, through their shapes and colors, demonstrate the main outcomes of this story. Passion for red triangles and complicity for yellow ones. Adjusted to the gold leather (22 karats), the whole reveals the intriguing life of these royal characters. Silks complete the adornment of the palaces of yesteryear.” Jacques Blanchet was born in 1915. It is not clear with whom he studied in Montreal, but in 1948 he received a grant from the Quebec government to study bookbinding in France and Italy. He spent a year abroad. Upon his return, a traveling exhibition throughout Canada was organized. His bindings are picturesque as was the taste in the 1940s and '50s. He wrote a small book titled Essaie sur la Reliure et les Relieurs au XXeS.
