Fedorov, 1892.</li><li>Quarto.</li><li>104 illustrations in black and white after Agin.</li><li>Text in Russian.</li><li>In the original wrapper, later half red morocco with title in gilt to spine.</li></ul> Alexander Agin (1817-75) was a Russian graphic artist and illustrator and this series of illustrations for Gogol's Dead Souls is considered his major work. They were first published in 1846 in serial form by Bernadsky with four prints each issue. Only 18 issues rather than the total 25 appeared as a quarrel between the Bernadsky and a gentleman named Goriainov, who owned the rights to the illustrations halted publication. In 1892, the bookseller D. Fedorov bought from Goryainov's heirs the rights to both the published and unpublished drawings engraved by Bernardsky. In 1892 he published them all under the title One Hundred Drawings for Gogol's Poem, and then, in the same year, a second and third edition appeared. For the third edition he added four more illustrations, one for the announcement of the first edition in 1846 and three drawings from the collection of the bibliophile, I. A. Efremov. The title was therefore changed from one hundred to one hundred and four - making this third edition the most complete.

A <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/books-&amp;-manuscripts/book/first-edition?locale=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">first edition</a> of Moi Skazki, illustrated by Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin.<ul><li>Illustrated by Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin (Russian).</li><li>Moi Skazki [My Tales].</li><li>St Petersburg: Devrien, 1895.</li><li>Octavo.</li><li>159 pages.</li><li>Half-title, title, dedication leaf, engraved portrait of the author, 8 lithographic plates with tissue guards, numerous illustrations in text.</li><li>Text in Russian.</li><li>Bound in the publisher's pictorial gilt blind-stamped blue cloth.</li></ul> Fine example of the first edition of this popular work, in a decorative publisher's gift binding. Issued by one of the best publishers of the time Devrien, Moi Skazki was illustrated by one of the most outstanding artists of the time Karazin, who was considered a Russian rival of Gustav Doré. Karazin worked on the coronation album for Alexander III in 1883 and in 1885 the Tsar commissioned eight paintings for the Winter Palace. The book was a success and many editions appeared over the years but the first remains scarce. In 1911, the Tsar and Tsarina thought it a suitable Christmas gift for the Tsarevich - a copy with their gift instruction is held in the Russian State Library.

Moi Skazki

A collection relating to <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Dylan%20Thomas&amp;tab=objects&amp;sortBy=bsp_dotcom_prod_en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Dylan Thomas</a>' A Child's Christmas in Wales.<ul><li>Sold as a set of 5 items.</li><li>Dylan Thomas (Welsh).</li><li>Includes the following: 1 typed letter, 2 type-scripts of Memories of Christmas, 1 first-edition copy of A Child’s Christmas in Wales, 1 volumes of The Listener, 1 recorded LP.</li></ul> This is a fine collection of items closely linked to Dylan Thomas’s ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’. Present is a typed letter, hand signed by Gaston Charpentier. The letter is addressed to Alec Snowden, the British film producer and son of Agnes Adamson Wallace née Crawford and the novelist J. Keighley Snowden; it is also addressed to his wife Renee. The typed section reads of literary matters and scandal, some of which is rather unflattering towards Thomas. The letter also mentions Augustus John, the Welsh painter and etcher. The final typed paragraph averts to more familial matters, speaking of grandchildren and ending with “I will leave Elizabeth to add a few words”, who then hand writes her contributions below. The subject of Elizabeth’s writing is primarily familial and signed “Love to you both. E.” in blue ink. The letter is on a single sheet of white watermarked paper. Present are two typescripts of Memories of Christmas, said to have been dictated by Dylan Thomas to Renee Snowden [nee Harrington]. One is signed ‘Dylan Thomas’ on the final page, presumably by the producer to indicate that this was Thomas’ reading copy, the other unsigned typescript is presumably for the producer himself. This copy shall be referred to as copy 1. Also present is what shall be referred to as copy 2, which is folded and toned throughout. Both transcripts were used during Thomas’ narration on Children’s Hour in 1945 under the title Memories of Christmas. The title was changed to A Child’s Christmas in Wales and was published as such in the USA and in the UK in 1978 with illustrations by Edward Ardizzone, published by Dent – a copy of which, in first edition form, is included in the collection. The story was initially published in The Listener (number 884 – December 20th 1945), which is also included i n the collection. In addition, the original recording on LP is included. The typescripts themselves contain new material, potentially undisclosed to the public. It varies in content to both the recorded and printed versions in the New Directions edition and in Dent’s edition. The primary distinction can be found on the first page, however differences in text occur throughout. The recorded, and printed versions start a new paragraph after “it snowed for twelve days and twelve nights when I was six”, however this typescript meets the end of the line with a semicolon, continuing “or whether the ice broke and the skating grocer vanished like a snowman through a white trapdoor on that same Christmas day that the mince[-]pies finished Uncle Arnold [cont.]”. There seems to be a similar difference in a wide selection of pages of a similar nature. It is next seen on page 2. While the printed and recorded versions are different to these scripts, the first two pages of this version appear online. The two typescripts appear identical in typed content.

Ivan Krylov (1769-1844) is Russia's best known fabulist. While many of his earlier fables were loosely based on Aesop's and La Fontaine's, later fables were original work, often satirizing the incompetent bureaucracy that stifled social progress at the time.

In 1889, Lewis Carroll adapted his beloved Alice In Wonderland for younger readers as The Nursery Alice. With picture-loving children in mind, he suggested that Macmillan use color-printed illustrations in this edition, and enlisted his close collaborator John Tenniel to add color to his earlier designs. However, when he received the proofs, Carroll was aghast: "The pictures are far too bright and gaudy, and vulgarize the whole thing," he lamented, "NONE must be sold in England" (Lovett, 36). Carroll suggested that Macmillan offload the offending copies to their American offices, and demanded the printer produce another edition "with Tenniel's coloured pictures before him" (Lovett, 36).] This copy of The Nursery Alice reflects Carroll's editorial input, with the colors duly toned down. Given the target audience and poor quality of the binding materials for this production, copies are rarely found today in decent condition.
