Illustrated Books

American Arts and Crafts-style illuminated manuscript on vellum by the designer credited with leading the American revival in hand-lettering.<ul><li>Frederic W. Goudy (American).</li><li>Ecclesiastes, or, The Preacher.</li><li>n.p,&nbsp;[circa 1890s].</li><li>112 pages.</li><li>Signed by Goudy on the title page.</li><li>Original full brown goatskin, elaborately gilt-embossed floral borders, central medallion gilt-embossed within interior, gilt-embossed corners within frame with burgundy goatskin doublures with gilt-bordered blue-ground central and corner piece cutouts ornamented with leather filigree work and top and bottom edges gilt.</li></ul> One of the best-known American type designers of the 20th century, Goudy made an in-depth study of letterforms and their history. Many of his typefaces and book designs are directly informed by his historical research, from examples of the Italian Renaissance, to German blackletter, to Roman monumental capitals. Goudy began his artistic career as a lettering artist; his student, the type designer Oswald Cooper, credited Goudy with beginning the American revival in hand-lettering. Goudy was greatly influenced by William Morris, who studied medieval arts and early printing in an ambitious project to re-evaluate every aspect of book production; Morris's Kelmscott Press was the inspiration for Goudy's own Village Press. This manuscript is clearly a production in the same spirit, forming a detailed study in the making of an illuminated manuscript, and bound in a manner informed by manuscript-era techniques in the Middle East, such as the Timurid and Safavid styles (though with certain conscious departures, like the lack of the otherwise characteristic flap).

The Illustrated Works of Shakespeare

First edition of this map of the eastern United States, annotated as the tide of the Civil War turned against the Confederacy. 	<ul><li>Edward Stanford (English).</li><li>London: Edward Stanford, [1861].</li><li>Original hand-colored linen-backed map dissected into 48 sections.</li><li>Ads for other Stanford publications to front and rear.</li><li>19 locations underlined in contemporary red, blue, and black. Many roads and railways highlighted in contemporary red.</li><li>Initials “M. S.” to label.</li><li>Housed in original slipcase with typographic label.</li></ul> The annotations on this map indicate that it was sold during a turning point in the Civil War: 19 battle locations are underlined, the latest of which is Chicamaunga, fought in September 1863. By this time, the Confederacy had suffered several high-profile losses, including Gettysburg and Vicksburg (both also underlined), and the fall of Atlanta would come a year later.&nbsp;The owner of the map, “M. S.,” was clearly an interested observer of the conflict with a desire to stay up-to-date. They were also willing to pay 15 shillings for the most expensive folded version.The underlines are done in red, blue, and black, with no discernible scheme. “Big name” battles are highlighted, as well as smaller conflicts such as the Battle of the Hemp Bales in Lexington, Missouri. Historian Richard Stephenson describes “the broad interest” of British popular cartographers in the Civil War, identifying Edward Stanford as a “major contemporary map publisher.” Annotations of Confederate-won battles slightly outnumber those won by the Union, possibly reflecting England’s economic interest in the South’s success in the conflict.&nbsp;The Library of Congress copy cited in Stephenson’s catalogue notes a similar campaign of underlining the locations of battles and tracing roads and railroads; this indicates that it may have been added by the publisher. The quality of the underlining in the present copy is higher than that of the Library of Congress copy. It captures the progress of a critical moment in the war, when the outcome of the Civil War was still uncertain.

Storer, heightened with gum arabic, wood-engraved illustrations based on original watercolors.</li><li>First series bound in full brown leather with gilt ruling and titling to spines.</li><li>Second series bound in three-quarters black leather with morocco-grain cloth on boards.</li></ul> The extraordinary magnum opus of Henry Frederick Conrad Sander, a German-born orchidologist who spent much of his career in England. Sander named the collection after Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach, a fellow German and fellow orchidologist, and drew heavily on Reichebach’s work for the text in this collection. The majority of the life-size plates are based on watercolors by Henry George Moon, who eventually became Sander’s son-in-law. Although Reichenbachia was not the first collaboration between Moon and Sanders, they first met in 1884, when Moon visited Sander’s orchid nursery to make drawings for another publication, it is the work for which they are both most famous. The blocks on Moon’s watercolors were handmade out of wood, and the chromolithographs produced from them sometimes required as many as twenty inks; once the printing was completed, many of the plates were individually hand-finished. As a result, the work was fantastically expensive to print, reportedly costing well over £7,000 (over $1.2 million today).
