The Writings of Thomas Paine

A <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/maps-&amp;-botanicals" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">botanical</a> rendering of The Narrow Leaved Kalmia, from Robert John Thornton's <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=The+Temple+of+Flora&amp;pfilters.dateRange=upcoming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The Temple of Flora</a>.<ul><li>Single leaf.</li><li>London: Robert John Thornton, January the 1st 1799-[1807].</li><li>Aquatint and mezzotint, printed in color and finished by hand, from The Temple of Flora.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> Robert John Thornton was a prolific medical author and became a Doctor of Medicine at St Andrews University and licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians. However, he is best remembered for this great botanical publication The Temple of Flora, which formed a part of the larger work - New Illustration of the sexual system of...Linnaeus. In 1797, he also began advertising for subscribers to his planned natural history publishing venture, which eventually comprised of 30 folio botanical plates. For these remarkable illustrations, he engaged the services of the leading artists and engravers of his day: Sir William Beechey, James Opie, Henry Raeburn, John Russell, Philip Reinagle and others as painters; Francesco Bartolozzi, Richard Earlom and John Landseer. Most of the images were painted by Peter Charles Henderson and Philip Reinagle. These botanical illustrations are unique as they were the first flower prints with landscape backgrounds, depicting the natural habitat of the plant. The life-size flowers stand out dramatically and the whole effect is startlingly modern. Thornton's announced intention was to make this work the most magnificent tribute ever paid to the famous Swedish botanist Linnaeus by illustrating his Sexual System with the finest possible prints. All these were engraved on a larger scale than anything which had hitherto appeared and then were printed in color, an expensive and uncommon method in England at this time.

Letter accompanied by mailing envelope, both with matching paper-clip rust stain. Letter with some light wear along edges, small staining to lower corner. Addressed to G. W. Meyer and dated 8 Oktober 31 in Potsdam, the Letter reads in full: "Sehr geehrter Herr! Indem ich Ihnen für die Uebersendung des Buches von Henry George bestens danke, sende ich Ihnen anliegend die gewünschte Meinungsäusserung mit der Bitte um Weiterleitung an Mrs. Evans. Mit ausgezeichneter Hochachtung" and signed in ink "A. Einstein". He thanks Meyer for serving as an intermediary in getting a book to him and for forwarding the enclosed letter. The second letter is a typed copy of Einstein's previously enclosed letter, presumably made by Meyer before he passed the original on to Evans. Addressed to R. W. Evans and dated 8.10.1931 in Potsdam, the letter discusses Henry George's economic theory of poverty and land nationalization, compares it to Franz Oppenheimer's work, and proposes questions to be asked. Presumably he was sent a copy of Henry George's Progress and Poverty. First published in 1879, it sparked the Progressive Era, discussing the paradox of increasing inequality and poverty amid economic and technological progress as well as the economic value of land.

Today, this legendary train line is still considered one of the greatest infrastructure projects in the history of mankind. A railway across Eurasia not only made the East closer but also contributed to the foundation of many cities, without which it is impossible to imagine Russia. It only took about 25 years to complete the railway.&nbsp;Created&nbsp;in Krasnoyarsk by I. R. Tomashkevich and M. B. Axelrode, this photo album was meant to proudly advertise and promote this difficult engineering enterprise. This reportage fostered the new policies of the ruling class aiming to unify Russia culturally, as pointed out by the scholar Mikhaylova Natalia in “Confectionery trade cards from the series ‘The views of Siberia and the Siberian railway’ as part of mass visual culture of the late 19 early 20 century Russia” in ART&amp;CULT, No. 18, 2-2015:&nbsp;“This method of memorialization of a large state-sponsored construction project had foreign analogues: in the late 1860s an album&nbsp;“Great West Illustrated”&nbsp;devoted to the construction of the Pacific railroad was published in the United States. However, the significance of the Tomashkevich-Axelrode album for its time was far more profound than just publishing the documents on Trans-Siberian Railway. It played an important role in promoting this ambitious construction project, both in Russia and abroad. The album was presented at the&nbsp;Exposition Universelle of 1900&nbsp;in Paris and, along with the famous panoramas of P. Piasecky, was meant to shape a visual image of a new large-scale Russian undertaking in European audience. […]&nbsp;A world’s fair in Paris was widely covered in the press of the period, and the Russian public was well informed about the exhibits presented in the Russian pavilion that were dedicated to the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway. It is likely that the album by Tomashkevich-Axelrode had a high cultural status“.

However, he is best remembered for this great botanical publication&nbsp;The Temple of Flora, which formed a part of the larger work -&nbsp;New Illustration of the sexual system of...Linnaeus. In 1797, he also began advertising for subscribers to his planned natural history publishing venture, which eventually comprised of 30 folio botanical plates. For these remarkable illustrations, he engaged the services of the leading artists and engravers of his day: Sir William Beechey, James Opie, Henry Raeburn, John Russell, Philip Reinagle and others as painters; Francesco Bartolozzi, Richard Earlom and John Landseer. Most of the images were painted by Peter Charles Henderson and Philip Reinagle. These botanical illustrations are unique as they were the first flower prints with landscape backgrounds, depicting the natural habitat of the plant. The life-size flowers stand out dramatically and the whole effect is startlingly modern. Thornton's announced intention was to make this work the most magnificent tribute ever paid to the famous Swedish botanist Linnaeus by illustrating his Sexual System with the finest possible prints. All these were engraved on a larger scale than anything which had hitherto appeared and then were printed in color, an expensive and uncommon method in England at this time.

It comes from the collection of the prominent American journalist and avid and distinguished bibliophile Barton Currie. This attractive copy includes the wonderful engraved portrait of Johnson made by J. Heath after the famous painting by Joshua Reynolds and two other beautifully engraved plates – a facsimile of Johnson’s handwriting and a “Round Robin” with facsimiles of signatures. Boswell’s The Life of Samuel Johnson is considered by some as one of the greatest biographies ever written in the English language. Boswell’s personal acquaintance with Johnson began in 1763, and the author covered the entirety of Johnson’s life by means of additional research. The biography does indeed take many critical liberties with Johnson’s life, since Boswell makes some changes to Johnson’s quotations and even censors many comments. This is why some contemporary critics have stated that it cannot be considered a proper biography. However, the book is valued as both an important source of information on Johnson and his times, as well as an important work of English literature.

While Jeanne-Claude grew up in Morocco, Christo studied art before fleeing Communist Bulgaria. The two met when Christo was commissioned to paint a portrait of Jeanne-Claude’s mother. While in Paris, they began to concept ephemeral environmental pieces such as stacking oil cans in an alley as a comment on the Berlin Wall (The Iron Curtain).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Moving to New York, they continued to plan their international installations, which would take years to get approval as well as figure out the technical requirements to wrap public buildings in swaths of fabric.
