Basquiat’s paintings are largely responsible for elevating graffiti artists into the realm of the New York gallery scene. His spray-painted crowns and scribbled words referenced everything from his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, to political issues, pop-culture icons, and Biblical verse. The gestural marks and expressive nature of his work not only aligned him with the street art of Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, but also the Neo-Expressionists Julian Schnabel and David Salle. “If you wanna talk about influence, man, then you've got to realize that influence is not influence,” he said of his process. “It's simply someone's idea going through my new mind.” Born on December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, NY, Basquiat never finished high school but developed an appreciation for art as a youth, from his many visits to the Brooklyn Museum of Art with his mother. His early work consisted of spray painting buildings and trains in downtown New York alongside his friend Al Diaz. The artist’s tag was the now infamous pseudonym SAMO. After quickly rising to fame in the early 1980s, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988 in New York, NY. The Whitney Museum of American Art held the artist’s first retrospective from October 1992 to February 1993. In 2017, after having set Basquiat’s auction record the previous year with a $57.3 million purchase, the Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa surpassed it, buying the artist’s Untitled (1982) at Sotheby's for $110.5 million. This set a new record for the highest price ever paid at auction for an American artist's work. Today, Basquiat's works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among others.

The artist turned to feature-filmmaking in the 1990s with his film Basquiat (1996), an intimate fictionalized account of the life of his late friend. Schnabel went on to win the Grand Jury Prize for Before Night Falls (2000) at the Venice Film Festival and the Best Director Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007). He currently lives and works between New York, NY and Montauk, NY. Shore began making these books in the spring of 2003 and first exhibited them at 303 Gallery, New York, that Autumn. Each book is a visual record of Shore’s activities on a given day. The first book, KT Ranch, is interesting as it features archive photographs, an example of work made before Shore defined the parameters of the project: initially photographs taken over one day, he later refined it to be photographs taken during the course of one day on days when the New York Times deemed it appropriate to print a full-width six-column headline on its front page.&nbsp;&nbsp;KT Ranch is not included in The Book of Books: Photographs by Stephen Shore (2012), the survey of this project published in an edition of 250. The other two books are featured, and these are inscribed to Bill Charles, an agent who represented Shore and other artists, including Joel Sternfeld, Jeff Mermelstein, Adam Broomberg &amp; Oliver Chanarin, and Larry Sultan, for commercial work in the late twentieth and early twentieth centuries. Alfred Barr, Director of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, had encouraged Soby to visit Man Ray in Paris, and following their meeting, Soby subsidized the production of this, the first monograph of Man Ray’s work.&nbsp;&nbsp;Man Ray had hoped that royalties from the sale of this book would enable him to make a long-overdue trip back to New York. Photographs... was well received in France, but in the United States, the reception was distinctly less enthusiastic. Lewis Mumford wrote in The New Yorker that Man Ray had ‘done almost everything with a camera, except use it to take photographs... photographing Calla lilies so that they will look like drawings by a second-rate academician.’ Commercially, it was not a success. It is widely suggested that in an attempt to generate sales, the publishers recalled the book and replaced the original title page with one stating ‘deuxième édition’. The favorable reception in France also led to the ‘second edition’ being titled in French with attention drawn to the other contributors: Man Ray. Haring produced a large number of these public works between 1980 and 1985, integrating his motifs outlined figures into everyday public space in a way that directly engaged its viewers. Haring's 1st solo exhibition was held at Westbeth Painters Space in 1981 and a celebrated show debuted at the historic Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York the following year. Throughout the 1980s, Haring was committed to democratizing the art experience and along with paintings, he also created theater sets, billboards, murals, advertising campaigns and even a line of Swatch watches. In 1986 he opened the Pop Shop in SoHo, selling apparel, posters and toys bearing his drawings. This was a controversial move, as many galleries criticized Haring for “de-valuing” the art object while others, such as Andy Warhol, championed Haring’s insistence on making art accessible and affordable. Pop Shop was highly influential to contemporary crossovers of art and merchandise that are now so dominant, as in the work of Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, KAWS and Takashi Murakami. In addition to this ideology of accessibility, Haring was also very socially engaged and used his striking imagery to promote awareness of various political and social campaigns. His many notable public works included a mural on the western side of the Berlin Wall, the&nbsp;Crack is Wack&nbsp;mural in New York, and a mural for the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty in 1986. Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988 and used his presence in the arts community to raise awareness of the crisis. In 1989, a year before his death, he established the Keith Haring Foundation, whose mission is to raise funds for AIDS organizations and children’s literacy and arts programs. Since his death in 1990, Haring has become one of the most widely-recognized and celebrated artists of the 20th century.

With over 200 books to his name and an active period that spans five decades, his work encapsulates the picture book boom of the last quarter of the 20th century, and the innovations of the 21st. Born and raised in Newburyport, Massachusetts, he once recalled that, despite harboring a love of drawing since age 2, his passion for sports long eclipsed any artistic aims. After a series of odd jobs, he enrolled in the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston when he was 23, and published his first picture book in 1971. For the first decade of his career, he continued to entertain dreams of sports stardom: "[T]o support myself until the big endorsement money starts rolling in, I illustrate books," he reported (only half-jokingly) in 1978. By the 1980s, McPhail's skill with paint and pen made him a fixture of the field. "He is a talented artist and a talented author, exhibiting unusual versatility in both roles," noted Ariel North in 1985 in the pages of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. His reputation (and bibliography) continued to grow throughout the '90s (when the bulk of this archive begins), with a selection of his pig illustrations being featured in the 1993 "This Wondrous World: Children's Book Illustration in New England" exhibition. While lamenting the lack of creativity in the so-called "message" picture books of the late '90s, the New York Times praised McPhail's talent for creating picture books that were actually for children, rather than the edification of adults. In the paper's review of McPhail's 1997 Edward And The Pirates — a picture book about the joy of reading — Natalie Babbitt observes "Mr. McPhail [...] is skillful enough to make a good story in spite of [his inclusion of a message] [...] If we want children to learn to love reading, then we have to make it a pleasure." The book would go on to be honored in the Times's Best Illustrated Books list of 1998. Among other accolades, McPhail has earned a Boston Globe–Horn Book Honor, a Children's Choice Award, a Parent's Choice Award, and a Children's Booksellers Choices Award. His art has been exhibited in museums and galleries such as the Children's Museum of New Hampshire and the Surroundings Art Gallery, and several of his books were adapted as a stage musical in 1999. Additionally, his work has been honored by the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Children's Book Council/International Reading Association, the School Library Journal, the Child Study Association, the Association of Booksellers for Children, Publishers Weekly, among many others. McPhail's career in the picture book field is worthy of note for both its longevity and the high quality of his work. "Basically, my job is to do the best books I can. If it pleases me, I think someone like me will get a kick out of it. I think most artists and writers are self-centered, they live in their own little world. I know I do for much of the time." A dense and revealing collection of materials documenting from conception to published book (completed art, publisher correspondence, mock-ups, research materials, etc.) more than 70 of McPhail's published projects over more than six decades, including more than two dozen original works of framed art, with over eighty more loose or matted. Plath made visual art throughout her life in a wide variety of mediums: from collage and oils to watercolor and pastels. Before she settled firmly on poetry in college, she seriously considered majoring in art. This early piece, painted while she was in high school (and, given the inscription on the verso, likely submitted to an art contest or competition), is executed in colorful gouache in a decidedly modern, almost Fauvist style, and features an unnamed young woman resting her chin in her hand. The approach to this piece speaks to her early experimentation with the kind of art that would inspire her writing as an adult. Plath would later write to her mother, "I feel I'm developing a kind of primitive style of my own which I am very fond of" (August 28th, 1956). In 1958, she wrote that her "deepest source of inspiration" was "the art of primitives like Henri Rousseau, Gauguin and Paul Klee and De Chirico [...] Once I start writing, it comes and comes" (quoted in Clark, 518). As this letter suggests, Plath did not merely dabble in art: it was in many ways central to her creative practice. According to Dorothy Moss, curator of the 2017 Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery exhibition of Plath's art, ONE LIFE: SYLVIA PLATH, "I think that once you know that she drew and painted and sketched constantly as a child, and realize that she went to college to major in art, you'll start seeing how vivid her descriptions are, and how beautifully she put visual images into words." That exhibition prominently featured Plath's painting "Triple-Face Portrait" (1950), which shares a decidedly similar sensibility with this piece. As the New York Historical Society said when celebrating the 100th anniversary of the event: "[I]t changed the way Americans thought about modern art. It has been called the most important exhibition ever held in the United States." Organized by the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, the show introduced American audiences to Cubist, Surrealist, and Fauvist art, and helped establish artists like Picasso and Matisse as household names. But this change was not a uniformly welcome one: "Is their work a conspicuous milestone in the progress of art? Or is it junk?" pondered The New York Times review of the show. "[M]any of [Matisse's] paintings are simply the exaltation to the walls of a gallery of the drawings of a nasty boy," artist and critic Kenyon Cox remarked in the same review. Mary Mills and Earl Harvey Lyall were quick to respond with The Cubies' ABC. It was published the same year as the watershed exhibition, while critics continued to debate the assemblage of Modern Art featured therein. Earl, an architect and government architectural advisor, was well-placed to execute the pastiches of the Armory Show's most significant works. Dotted throughout this abecedary are clever nods to Matisse's "Blue Nude," Wilhelm Lehmbruck's "The Kneeling One," Picasso's "Woman with Mustard Pot," and more. The angular bodies of the Cubies themselves recall isolated shapes within Duchamp's iconic "Nude Descending a Staircase," the piece that became most identified with many viewers' fury at the show.

In January 1985, Basquiat enjoyed his first one-artist show, at the Bischofberger Gallery in Zurich. This is the commemorative book of 12 paintings from that show." Jean-Michel Basquiat was an influential African-American artist who rose to success during the 1980s. Basquiat’s paintings are largely responsible for elevating graffiti artists into the realm of the New York gallery scene. His spray-painted crowns and scribbled words referenced everything from his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, to political issues, pop-culture icons, and Biblical verse. The gestural marks and expressive nature of his work not only aligned him with the street art of Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, but also the Neo-Expressionists Julian Schnabel and David Salle. “If you wanna talk about influence, man, then you've got to realize that influence is not influence,” he said of his process. “It's simply someone's idea going through my new mind.” Born on December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, NY, Basquiat never finished high school but developed an appreciation for art as a youth, from his many visits to the Brooklyn Museum of Art with his mother. His early work consisted of spray painting buildings and trains in downtown New York alongside his friend Al Diaz. The artist’s tag was the now infamous pseudonym SAMO. After quickly rising to fame in the early 1980s, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988 in New York, NY. The Whitney Museum of American Art held the artist’s first retrospective from October 1992 to February 1993. In 2017, after having set Basquiat’s auction record the previous year with a $57.3 million purchase, the Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa surpassed it, buying the artist’s Untitled (1982) at Sotheby's for $110.5 million. This set a new record for the highest price ever paid at auction for an American artist's work. Today, Basquiat's works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among others.
