Basquiat’s paintings are largely responsible for elevating graffiti artists into the realm of the New York gallery scene. His spray-painted crowns and scribbled words referenced everything from his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, to political issues, pop-culture icons, and Biblical verse. The gestural marks and expressive nature of his work not only aligned him with the street art of Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, but also the Neo-Expressionists Julian Schnabel and David Salle. “If you wanna talk about influence, man, then you've got to realize that influence is not influence,” he said of his process. “It's simply someone's idea going through my new mind.” Born on December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, NY, Basquiat never finished high school but developed an appreciation for art as a youth, from his many visits to the Brooklyn Museum of Art with his mother. His early work consisted of spray painting buildings and trains in downtown New York alongside his friend Al Diaz. The artist’s tag was the now infamous pseudonym SAMO. After quickly rising to fame in the early 1980s, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988 in New York, NY. The Whitney Museum of American Art held the artist’s first retrospective from October 1992 to February 1993. In 2017, after having set Basquiat’s auction record the previous year with a $57.3 million purchase, the Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa surpassed it, buying the artist’s Untitled (1982) at Sotheby's for $110.5 million. This set a new record for the highest price ever paid at auction for an American artist's work. Today, Basquiat's works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among others.

The son of a weaver at the Aubusson Factory, he is first mentioned as a pupil of Joseph Malaine (1745-1809), the eminent flower painter, and is known to have worked for both the Gobelin Factory and the porcelain factory of Sèvres. These watercolors are excellent examples of Barraband's remarkable talent and meticulous detail when it came to depicting plumage and color. These watercolors were in fact intended to illustrate the System of Birds of Egypt and Syria written by the zoologist Marie-Jules César Lelorme de Savigny (1777-1851) and published in 1809. This text was itself part of Volume I of the Natural History of the Description of Egypt, or Collection of observations and research that were made in Egypt during the expedition of the French army, published by the orders of his majesty the Emperor Napoleon the Great. This work, which consisted of 9 volumes of texts and 11 volumes of plates, was the fruit of the important scientific expedition that accompanied Napoleon's Egyptian campaign which was launched in April 1798. The Description de l'Egypte work aimed to highlight the greatness of Egypt, which at the time was extremely popular in Europe. In order to produce the most complete vision of Egypt, as well as the antiquities and architecture, the fauna and flora were also described with contributions by scholars such as Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, whose texts Barraband also illustrates. In total, the artist contributed 44 plates of birds to the Description de l'Egypt. His drawings were then engraved for Savigny were engraved by Louis Bouquet. The richness and quality of Barraband's work was recognized as early as 1804, when he was awarded a gold medal for his illustrations for the Description de l'Egypt and Levaillant's Natural History.

Shore began making these books in the spring of 2003 and first exhibited them at 303 Gallery, New York, that Autumn. Each book is a visual record of Shore’s activities on a given day. The first book, KT Ranch, is interesting as it features archive photographs, an example of work made before Shore defined the parameters of the project: initially photographs taken over one day, he later refined it to be photographs taken during the course of one day on days when the New York Times deemed it appropriate to print a full-width six-column headline on its front page.&nbsp;&nbsp;KT Ranch is not included in The Book of Books: Photographs by Stephen Shore (2012), the survey of this project published in an edition of 250. The other two books are featured, and these are inscribed to Bill Charles, an agent who represented Shore and other artists, including Joel Sternfeld, Jeff Mermelstein, Adam Broomberg &amp; Oliver Chanarin, and Larry Sultan, for commercial work in the late twentieth and early twentieth centuries. Added to the group is a book by John Midgley, another photographer who worked with Bill Charles, which was also produced as an iPhoto book.&nbsp;

Published for the first time in 1842, the novel went on to exert a huge influence over the development of Russian literature. In 1923 the French publisher Ambroise Vollard asked Chagall to produce an illustrated edition. Chagall, who had always felt a strong emotional connection to the country where he spent his youth, agreed with enthusiasm and pursued the project between 1923 and 1927. However, like many other Vollard projects, the production of the work was interrupted and only completed years later. The final plate presents a particularly curious image in which Gogol reads and Chagall paints a portrait of Vollard.

Plath made visual art throughout her life in a wide variety of mediums: from collage and oils to watercolor and pastels. Before she settled firmly on poetry in college, she seriously considered majoring in art. This early piece, painted while she was in high school (and, given the inscription on the verso, likely submitted to an art contest or competition), is executed in colorful gouache in a decidedly modern, almost Fauvist style, and features an unnamed young woman resting her chin in her hand. The approach to this piece speaks to her early experimentation with the kind of art that would inspire her writing as an adult. Plath would later write to her mother, "I feel I'm developing a kind of primitive style of my own which I am very fond of" (August 28th, 1956). In 1958, she wrote that her "deepest source of inspiration" was "the art of primitives like Henri Rousseau, Gauguin and Paul Klee and De Chirico [...] Once I start writing, it comes and comes" (quoted in Clark, 518). As this letter suggests, Plath did not merely dabble in art: it was in many ways central to her creative practice. According to Dorothy Moss, curator of the 2017 Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery exhibition of Plath's art, ONE LIFE: SYLVIA PLATH, "I think that once you know that she drew and painted and sketched constantly as a child, and realize that she went to college to major in art, you'll start seeing how vivid her descriptions are, and how beautifully she put visual images into words." That exhibition prominently featured Plath's painting "Triple-Face Portrait" (1950), which shares a decidedly similar sensibility with this piece. In January 1985, Basquiat enjoyed his first one-artist show, at the Bischofberger Gallery in Zurich. This is the commemorative book of 12 paintings from that show." Jean-Michel Basquiat was an influential African-American artist who rose to success during the 1980s. Basquiat’s paintings are largely responsible for elevating graffiti artists into the realm of the New York gallery scene. His spray-painted crowns and scribbled words referenced everything from his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, to political issues, pop-culture icons, and Biblical verse. The gestural marks and expressive nature of his work not only aligned him with the street art of Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, but also the Neo-Expressionists Julian Schnabel and David Salle. “If you wanna talk about influence, man, then you've got to realize that influence is not influence,” he said of his process. “It's simply someone's idea going through my new mind.” Born on December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, NY, Basquiat never finished high school but developed an appreciation for art as a youth, from his many visits to the Brooklyn Museum of Art with his mother. His early work consisted of spray painting buildings and trains in downtown New York alongside his friend Al Diaz. The artist’s tag was the now infamous pseudonym SAMO. After quickly rising to fame in the early 1980s, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988 in New York, NY. The Whitney Museum of American Art held the artist’s first retrospective from October 1992 to February 1993. In 2017, after having set Basquiat’s auction record the previous year with a $57.3 million purchase, the Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa surpassed it, buying the artist’s Untitled (1982) at Sotheby's for $110.5 million. This set a new record for the highest price ever paid at auction for an American artist's work. Today, Basquiat's works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among others.

A typed letter from Motherwell on Spanish politics and art.<ul><li>Robert Motherwell (American).</li><li>Signed “Robert Motherwell,” to Nancy Macdonald of Spanish Refugee Aid Inc. of NY.</li><li>909 North Street, Greenwich, CT:&nbsp;March 31, 1980.</li><li>Two pages on letterhead.</li><li>Presented in brown cloth chemise.</li></ul> Lengthy typed letter with content concerning Motherwell’s uneasy negotiation of Spanish politics and art. In 1980, the Juan March Foundation and the Catalan bank La Caixa organized the first exhibition of Motherwell’s work in Spain. His series of works titled Elegies for the Spanish Republic, begun in 1949 and continued until his death in 1991, totaled more than 170 works and would strongly link the artist with anti-Francosim and the lost Spanish Republic. However, as this letter demonstrates, in person, Motherwell maintained a professional, neutral stance, and seemed to have trouble engaging the Spanish in any political conversation. Reading, in part:“I didn’t realize at the time of the New York Times announcement that, though the Juan March Foundation originated the show, in Barcelona it was under the auspices of the largest savings bank in Catalonia, ‘la Caixa,’ at a small museum they have acquired. If I understand correctly, it is either Spanish or certainly Catalonian law that such a bank must spend 50% of it’s annual profits on culture … The Jaun March Foundation, as far as I can tell, is almost an exact equivalent of the J.S. Guggenheim Foundation here … They seem extremely wealthy, honorable in intent, and highly efficient — I mean an almost IBM-corporate efficiency, shattering every cliché about ‘mañana’ (what is ironic is that the fabulously wealthy Juan March was the financial backer of Franco, and yet in my show are major ‘Elegies to the Spanish Republic.’). My impression, for what it’s worth, is that there’s a kind of understanding that anything scholarly or artistic can be done as long as one stays away from partisan politics. For instance, Barcelona insisted that I be present and treated me beautifully, while the Juan March people [from Madrid] had implied that it wasn’t necessary to go to Barcelona, and immediately descended on the scene. As you know, there are tremendous Separatist movements in Spain …&nbsp; Being a fish swimming in foreign waters, I asked various people who know the scene what to do, and the concensus [sic] is that it is a Spanish labyrinth that is *their* problem … Naturally my own interest is in the artistic community, which seems both aware and touched by any outside support. But my experience in Barcelona was (as in Germany, for example) that political discourse is conspicuous by its absence in any general conversation … Everything I have said is impressions — I found the Spanish, unlike Latin Hispanics, extremely reserved and discrete, almost like old-time New England Yankees. What lies underneath I really don’t know … I realize I am a bit vague because I really don’t *know* anything. I have been going on the artist in me, which senses tensions, pride and formality, eagerness and extreme vulnerability, and since I am not by nature an activist, I have reacted with thorough professionalism instinctively, which seems to be precisely correct … Naturally I find it both strange and irresistable [sic] to show my Hispanic sympathies under such auspices, but there are unexpected occasions: for instance, I’ve given a small ‘Elegy to the Spanish Republic’ to the University of Salamance (the oldest one in Spain), and they wish to honor me with a ceremony, which I presume the central government is aware of, and I personally somewhat dread, not being an exhibitionist but an exhibitor … In Barcelona, several young artists told me that, after hearing me speak and reading an interview with me, they were determined to leave for New York. In short, my whole experience is basically as an individual with other individuals, as it is here at home, for that matter. (I have stuck with the Guggenheim Foundation because it is the only Foundation that gives exclusively to individuals, *not* institutions.)”

In 1943, Lichtenstein was drafted into the army, serving for three years before returning to school. In 1949, he received an MFA, and continued to teach and paint in Ohio for several years. His early 1950s works, painted in a European Modernist style, frequently depict uniquely “American” subjects, including scenes of western expansion and an adaptation of Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze’s famous Washington Crossing the Delaware (1871). In the 1960s, Lichtenstein moved to New Jersey to teach at Rutgers University, and began his iconic comic strip works, which marked a distinct break with his previous aesthetic. Lichtenstein was motivated to create works that no one would want to hang on the walls, later commenting, “The one thing everyone hated was commercial art; apparently they didn’t hate that enough, either.” A solo show of such works at the Leo Castelli Gallery in 1962 garnered him critical acclaim and notoriety in the art world. His work continued to incorporate pop culture themes, displaying static images of figures, brushstrokes, landscapes, mirrors, reflections and other subject matter in an ironic style. His later works feature close examinations of illusionism and the representation of reality in art. A very prolific, celebrated and sought-after artist, Lichtenstein created many public sculptures during his lifetime, and his work has been the subject of many retrospectives around the world. He died in New York City in 1997 at 74 years old.
