Dowhan, Jr. Burgess's "Bedtime Story" syndicated column ran six days a week from 1912 to 1960, for a whopping total of 15,000 "episodes" – and this was while he was actively engaged in writing books, other stories, and radio plays. He first teamed up with illustrator Harrison Cady in 1911, and Cady began providing a line drawing for each "Bedtime Stories" episode in 1913. The contrast between Cady's illustrations for Burgess's books and the "Bedtime Story" column is evident: Cady had to rely on sharp contrasts when drawing for the newspaper, as the final print would be of a much smaller size and lower quality than the books. These 44 original pen-and-ink drawings span a period of about six months in the year 1955, with examples from every month from January to August (except for July). They represent a compound snapshot of the massive output of the Burgess-Cady team, and of Cady's artistic decision-making. Pencil sketch lines are evident below many of the final ink strokes, and his use of crosshatching instead of softer shading to communicate textures and shadow. A cohesive assemblage illustrative of the later days of the column that made Burgess a household name.

When Raymond Levy of Editions André Sauret first approached the artist about illustrating Shakespeare's Tempest, Chagall initially hesitated because he was afraid he might not do justice to the text, but then between March and May 1975, he produced fifty drawings on tracing paper, which were transferred onto zinc plates and sent back to Chagall for final retouching.

Although Timlin was born in England, he was raised in South Africa. Along with his success in painting, Timlin was also a practicing architect. The Ship That Sailed To Mars was Timlin's masterpiece, of which this artwork is reminiscent. He executed a later series of pictures intended for a book to be called The Building Of A Fairy City, but which was never published. Accomplished with rich colors in Timlin's Rackhamesque style, the fanciful picture shows a huge tree trunk used as a house. Standing at the door of the tree house is a young woman who is talking to a gnome-like man who is leaning on a fence. Peeking out of a window in the tree house is an elf-like man. Done with much detail and quite wonderful.

The gestural marks and expressive nature of his work not only aligned him with the street art of Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, but also the Neo-Expressionists Julian Schnabel and David Salle. “If you wanna talk about influence, man, then you've got to realize that influence is not influence,” he said of his process. “It's simply someone's idea going through my new mind.” Born on December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, NY, Basquiat never finished high school but developed an appreciation for art as a youth, from his many visits to the Brooklyn Museum of Art with his mother. His early work consisted of spray painting buildings and trains in downtown New York alongside his friend Al Diaz. The artist’s tag was the now infamous pseudonym SAMO. After quickly rising to fame in the early 1980s, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988 in New York, NY. The Whitney Museum of American Art held the artist’s first retrospective from October 1992 to February 1993. In 2017, after having set Basquiat’s auction record the previous year with a $57.3 million purchase, the Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa surpassed it, buying the artist’s Untitled (1982) at Sotheby's for $110.5 million. This set a new record for the highest price ever paid at auction for an American artist's work. Today, Basquiat's works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among others.

I, Zoologie.</li><li>2 of the 3 watercolors described here are signed: 1 is unsigned as it was part of the other signed plate.</li><li>Each is presented framed.</li></ul> Jacques Barraband (1767-1809) was one of the finest ornithological artists of his time. The son of a weaver at the Aubusson Factory, he is first mentioned as a pupil of Joseph Malaine (1745-1809), the eminent flower painter, and is known to have worked for both the Gobelin Factory and the porcelain factory of Sèvres. These watercolors are excellent examples of Barraband's remarkable talent and meticulous detail when it came to depicting plumage and color. These watercolors were in fact intended to illustrate the System of Birds of Egypt and Syria written by the zoologist Marie-Jules César Lelorme de Savigny (1777-1851) and published in 1809. This text was itself part of Volume I of the Natural History of the Description of Egypt, or Collection of observations and research that were made in Egypt during the expedition of the French army, published by the orders of his majesty the Emperor Napoleon the Great. This work, which consisted of 9 volumes of texts and 11 volumes of plates, was the fruit of the important scientific expedition that accompanied Napoleon's Egyptian campaign which was launched in April 1798. The Description de l'Egypte work aimed to highlight the greatness of Egypt, which at the time was extremely popular in Europe. In order to produce the most complete vision of Egypt, as well as the antiquities and architecture, the fauna and flora were also described with contributions by scholars such as Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, whose texts Barraband also illustrates. In total, the artist contributed 44 plates of birds to the Description de l'Egypt. His drawings were then engraved for Savigny were engraved by Louis Bouquet. The richness and quality of Barraband's work was recognized as early as 1804, when he was awarded a gold medal for his illustrations for the Description de l'Egypt and Levaillant's Natural History.

This illustration appears on page 39 of the first edition, published by Coward McCann in 1938. Snow White has fallen asleep after eating the poisoned apple and lies under glass cover in the woods. Prince Charming is approaching on the left, a dwarf sleeps in a tree to the right, and forest creatures watch in anticipation. A wonderful image; original art by Gág is quite rare.

Included is a letter of provenance by Speer. The entire edition sold out, sight unseen, in only fourteen days. 21st Editions was awarded the prestigious Independent Publisher (IPPY) Book Award Silver Medal in 2008 for "Best Book Arts Craftsmanship" for its publication Mont-Saint-Michel. For years Michael Kenna has been recognized as one of the world's leading photographers, an artist with so great a grasp of place that his way of seeing Stonehenge, Versailles, Easter Island, Hokkaido, and elsewhere has become "our" way of seeing them. Kenna has now turned his eye to Mont-Saint-Michel where light dawns through graceful arches, cascades down stairways and roadways, wraps itself around 900 year old Gothic architecture in a delicate embrace as it seeps into otherwise impermeable stone to illuminate it from within. Kenna has indeed created the photographic portrait of the island and its architecture, a body of work which rivals and complements Henry Adams' classic Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres, the famed book which is the verbal portrait of the Mount. Joella Bayer knew Ray most of his life, having been introduced to the artist by her mother in Paris in the 1920s and then growing closer through her first husband, the gallerist Julien Levy, who frequently exhibited Ray. Ray portrayed or photographed Joella Bayer a number of times during his life, most famously in this book, where her solarized portrait appears as plate 47. Arranged in five thematic sections, Photographs includes laudatory essays and poems from Ray's surrealist contemporaries André Breton, Paul Éluard, Rrose Sélavy [Marcel Duchamp], and Tristan Tzara marking the divisions. Stated "Second Edition" (as almost all copies are); in fact it is the second issue of the first edition, mislabeled in an attempt "to generate demand where none existed by suggesting the edition had sold out. After replacing the title pages of these copies with one stating second edition, [the publisher] returned them for sale" (Roth 80).

Written over five years at the end of the long pilgrimage that brought Gogol to Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy, Dead Souls offers a vivid and ruthless portrait of a small swindler in provincial Russia in 1820. Published for the first time in 1842, the novel went on to exert a huge influence over the development of Russian literature. In 1923 the French publisher Ambroise Vollard asked Chagall to produce an illustrated edition. Chagall, who had always felt a strong emotional connection to the country where he spent his youth, agreed with enthusiasm and pursued the project between 1923 and 1927. However, like many other Vollard projects, the production of the work was interrupted and only completed years later. The final plate presents a particularly curious image in which Gogol reads and Chagall paints a portrait of Vollard.

Plath made visual art throughout her life in a wide variety of mediums: from collage and oils to watercolor and pastels. Before she settled firmly on poetry in college, she seriously considered majoring in art. This early piece, painted while she was in high school (and, given the inscription on the verso, likely submitted to an art contest or competition), is executed in colorful gouache in a decidedly modern, almost Fauvist style, and features an unnamed young woman resting her chin in her hand. The approach to this piece speaks to her early experimentation with the kind of art that would inspire her writing as an adult. Plath would later write to her mother, "I feel I'm developing a kind of primitive style of my own which I am very fond of" (August 28th, 1956). In 1958, she wrote that her "deepest source of inspiration" was "the art of primitives like Henri Rousseau, Gauguin and Paul Klee and De Chirico [...] Once I start writing, it comes and comes" (quoted in Clark, 518). As this letter suggests, Plath did not merely dabble in art: it was in many ways central to her creative practice. According to Dorothy Moss, curator of the 2017 Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery exhibition of Plath's art, ONE LIFE: SYLVIA PLATH, "I think that once you know that she drew and painted and sketched constantly as a child, and realize that she went to college to major in art, you'll start seeing how vivid her descriptions are, and how beautifully she put visual images into words." That exhibition prominently featured Plath's painting "Triple-Face Portrait" (1950), which shares a decidedly similar sensibility with this piece. In January 1985, Basquiat enjoyed his first one-artist show, at the Bischofberger Gallery in Zurich. This is the commemorative book of 12 paintings from that show." Jean-Michel Basquiat was an influential African-American artist who rose to success during the 1980s. Basquiat’s paintings are largely responsible for elevating graffiti artists into the realm of the New York gallery scene. His spray-painted crowns and scribbled words referenced everything from his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, to political issues, pop-culture icons, and Biblical verse. The gestural marks and expressive nature of his work not only aligned him with the street art of Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, but also the Neo-Expressionists Julian Schnabel and David Salle. “If you wanna talk about influence, man, then you've got to realize that influence is not influence,” he said of his process. “It's simply someone's idea going through my new mind.” Born on December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, NY, Basquiat never finished high school but developed an appreciation for art as a youth, from his many visits to the Brooklyn Museum of Art with his mother. His early work consisted of spray painting buildings and trains in downtown New York alongside his friend Al Diaz. The artist’s tag was the now infamous pseudonym SAMO. After quickly rising to fame in the early 1980s, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988 in New York, NY. The Whitney Museum of American Art held the artist’s first retrospective from October 1992 to February 1993. In 2017, after having set Basquiat’s auction record the previous year with a $57.3 million purchase, the Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa surpassed it, buying the artist’s Untitled (1982) at Sotheby's for $110.5 million. This set a new record for the highest price ever paid at auction for an American artist's work. Today, Basquiat's works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among others.

They were included in his third solo show at the Daniel Gallery in New York and were installed on a rotating pole that the viewer could spin, bringing the machine-like anthropomorphic forms to life. The original collages were destroyed, but he later reproduced them in this series of pochoirs, also including the explicative text which originally accompanied each work.
