Whatman 1804 and 1805.<ul><li>Well executed and highly atmospheric watercolors capturing the importance of the river for trade in early 19th century China.</li><li>Unusual and very attractive depictions of river life with the river in the foreground with a finely executed drawing of a native boat, the backgrounds showing landscape scenes interspersed with occasional architectural details.</li><li>Framed and glazed.</li></ul> The Pearl River is so named because of the pearl-colored shells that lie at the bottom of the river in the section that flows through the city of Guangzhou. Formerly often known as the Canton River, it is an extensive river system in southern China. The name "Pearl River" is also often used as a catchall for the watersheds of the Xi ("West"), Bei ("North") and Dong ("East") rivers of Guangdong. These rivers are all considered tributaries of the Pearl River because they share a common delta, the Pearl River Delta. Measured from the farthest&nbsp;of the Xi River, the Pearl River system is China's third-longest river, 2,400 kilometers, after the Yangtze River and the Yellow River, and second largest by volume, after the Yangtze.

Gamy Montaut | Ernest Montaut

Hand-colored pochoir print from Ernest and Gamy Montaut.<ul><li>Depicts airplane numbered Voisin 16 on September 3, 1910, high in flight above a bird's-eye view of river and townscape in the first Bordeaux raid done in six hours.</li><li>Framed and glazed.</li><li>Published by Mabileau and Company.</li></ul> Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of transportation, including power boat racing, motorcycle and motor car racing, motor car touring, zeppelins and tennis. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work, producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut," she also&nbsp;used the name "Gamy," an anagram for Maggie. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncolored prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each color. Watercolor was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The coloring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labor intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the coloring.

Large-scale watercolors on paper from the Chinese School.<ul><li>Sold as a set of 2.</li><li>Chinese scenes, possibly Canton or Shanghai, presumably executed for the Western market by an anonymous master and depicting internal and external views of a house.</li><li>Framed and glazed.</li><li>This type of export watercolor is usually found in a much smaller format, due to their delicate nature; it is uncommon to find examples of such size with fresh coloring.</li></ul>

Hand-colored engraved plates by Sepp and Sepp the Younger, of birds nests with eggs from Nederlandsche Vogelen.<ul><li>Sold as a set of 4.</li><li>Nidus Ardeae, Nycticoracis; Nidus Platalea, Leucorodia; Nidus Ardeae, Stellaris; and Nidus Pelecani, Carbonis.</li><li>Framed and glazed.</li><li>Published by Jan Christian Sepp, Amsterdam.</li><li>Nozeman's work, which he couldn't finish, became the first comprehensive account of the avifauna of Holland and was the most expensive book for sale in Holland at the time.</li><li>The plates of the book depict all species known in the Netherlands through the time of publication and frequently feature eggs and nests, they were boldly colored by the publisher and still belong to the most famous ornithological representations.</li></ul>

John Flamsteed

A star chart from the second edition of Flamsteed's Atlas Coelestis.<ul><li>Hand-colored sign of the zodiac heightened with gold and silver.</li><li>Engraved by John Mynde.</li><li>Framed and glazed.</li></ul> Charles II founded the Royal Observatory in Greenwich in 1675, and in the same year, John Flamsteed (1646–1719) was appointed the first Astronomer Royal. Flamsteed began to collect data on the stars as observed using a telescope in order to create a star atlas showing the celestial sky above Greenwich. This was a huge undertaking and Flamsteed didn't live to see its publication, which was finally produced by his widow in 1729, ten years after his death. The stars were positioned and the astrological coordinates drawn by Abraham Sharp, while the figures in the constellations were after drawings by Sir James Thornhill and others. In his atlas, Flamsteed corrects the errors in position made by earlier astronomers such as Bayer in the 17th century. It was considered the first significant contribution of the&nbsp;Observatory, and the numerical Flamsteed designations for stars are still in use.

Giorgio Gallesio

Giorgio Gallesio (Italian, 1772-1839) was a botanist and researcher of the 18th and 19th centuries.<ul><li>Sold as a set of 6.</li><li>Hand-colored plates of grapes, printed in color and finished by hand.</li><li>Finest Italian work on fruits, remarkable for the delicate and intense coloring.</li><li>The plates appeared in 41 parts, and Domenico del Pino, Antonio Serantoni and Isabella</li></ul>Bozzolini were among as many as 20 artists responsible for the designs.<ul><li>An almost equal number of engravers were involved; Giuseppe Pera, Giuseppe Carocci, Tommaso Nasi and Francesco Corsi were also well-represented.</li><li>Gallesio conducted experiments in his fruit garden in Savona, later quoted by Charles Darwin to illustrate the development of varieties.</li><li>Although he died before completion of this work, he had left pre-eminent contributions to the study of Italian fruit.</li><li>Framed and glazed.</li></ul>

Moritz Lowey (French, 1833-1907) and Pierre-Henri Puiseux (French, 1855-1928).<ul><li>Héliogravure after photographs by Loewy and Puiseux depicting the Moon’s surface, from L'Atlas Photographique de la Lune.</li><li>The finest and most meticulous image of the moon until the 1970s.</li><li>Deemed worthy of exhibition at the Paris World Fair in 1900.</li><li>L'Atlas Photographique de la Lune was the ultimate achievement of 19th-century astronomical photography, and can be regarded as one of the great publishing ventures of the 19th and early 20th centuries.</li><li>Moritz Loewy and Pierre-Henri Puiseux, assisted by Charles Morvan, undertook a project to make a complete series of detailed photographs of the moon and the lunar surface. Their very best images were then published in L'Atlas photographique de la Lune. This was issued in fascicles in 1896 and 1910 by the Observatory of Paris; the atlas represents the best and most complete overview of the work of Loewy and Puiseux.</li><li>The enlargements were used to decorate the showroom of the Ministère de l'Instruction Publique at the Exposition Universelle during the World's Fair, which was held in Paris in 1900.</li><li>Framed and glazed.</li></ul>

Johann Wilhelm Weinmann

Johann Weinmann (German, 1683–1741) a Regensburg apothecary and botanist who organized the publication of Phytanthoza Iconographia.<ul><li>Sold as a set of 4.</li><li>Double-page mezzotint engravings, printed in color and finished by hand.</li><li>The mezzotint process used here was invented by Johann Teyler in the Netherlands around 1688. Practiced by Bartholomaus Seuter (1678–1754) and Johann Elias Ridinger (1698–1767), it was really a combination of etching and mezzotint, which made delicate lines and a very fine grain possible.</li><li>The addition of hand-tinting brought about unusual and subtle effects.</li><li>This huge florilegum was not only very beautiful but also influenced the publication of similar works worldwide.</li><li>Framed and glazed.</li></ul>
