A map of Great Britain, by John Senex.<ul><li>John Senex (English).</li><li>A New Map of Great Britain Corrected from the Observations communicated to the Royal Society at London. By John Senex F.R.S. To the Right Hono[ra]ble William Connelly ESQ. One of the Commissioners of His Maj[es]ties Revenue, Speakerof the Hono[a]ble House of Commons, and one of His Maj[es]ties most Hono[ra]ble Privy Council for Ye Kingdom of Ireland. This Map is dedicated by John Senex.</li><li>England: John Senex F.R.S. 1710 (-1728).</li><li>Double-page engraved map on two sheets joined, with full contemporary hand-coloring.</li><li>This work is presented framed.</li></ul> John Senex (1678-1740) was one of the foremost mapmakers in England in the early eighteenth century. He was also a surveyor, globemaker and geographer. As a young man, he was apprenticed to Robert Clavell, a bookseller. He worked with several mapmakers over the course of his career, including Jeremiah Seller and Charles Price. In 1728, Senex was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society, a rarity for mapmakers. The Fellowship reflects his career-long association as engraver to the Society and publisher of maps by Edmund Halley, among other luminaries. He is best known for his English Atlas (1714), which remained in print until the 1760s. After his death in 1740, his widow, Mary, carried on the business until 1755. Thereafter, his stock was acquired by William Herbert and Robert Sayer (maps) and James Ferguson (globes).

A New Map of Great Britain

Robert John Thornton (English, 1768–1837).<ul><li>Aquatint and mezzotint, printed in color and finished by hand, heightened with gum arabic from The Temple of Flora.</li><li>Thornton was a prolific medical author and became a doctor of medicine at St Andrews University and licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians; however, he is best remembered for his great botanical publication The Temple of Flora, composed of 30 folio botanical plates. For these remarkable illustrations, he engaged the services of the leading artists and engravers of his day: Sir William Beechey, James Opie, Henry Raeburn, John Russell, Philip Reinagle and others as painters: Francesco Bartolozzi, Richard Earlom and John Landseer, however, most of the images were painted by Peter Charles Henderson and Philip Reinagle.</li><li>These botanical illustrations are unique as they were the first flower prints with landscape backgrounds, depicting the natural habitat of the plant.</li><li>The life-size flowers stand out dramatically and the whole effect is startlingly modern.</li><li>Framed and glazed.</li></ul>

Hand-colored mezzotint engravings of aloes in decorative pots by Johann Weinmann.<ul><li>Sold as a set of 12.</li><li>Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (German).</li><li>Amsterdam: Zacharias Romberg, 1736-1748.</li><li>In handmade gold-leaf frames and glazed with glass.</li></ul> Weinmann (1683-1741) was a Regensburg apothecary who organized the publication of Phytanthoza Iconographia, a huge florilegum which was not only very beautiful but which also influenced the publication of similar works worldwide. "The mezzotint process used here had been invented by Johann Teyler in the Netherlands around 1688. As practiced here by Bartholomaus Seuter (1678-1754) and Johann Elias Ridinger (1698-1767), it was really a combination of etching and mezzotint, which made possible delicate lines and a very fine grain. The addition of hand-tinting brought about unusual and subtle effects." (Hunt)

The top section is illustrated with 46 national flags and ensigns.

Bacon’s New Chart of the World Map

A group of watercolors of hyacinths by Pieter van Loo.<ul><li>Sold as a set of three prints, framed as one piece.</li><li>Pieter van Loo (Dutch).</li><li>Three bodycolor paintings of double hyacinths, with the names of the varieties lettered at the top, each signed below.</li><li>This work is presented framed.</li></ul> Pieter Van Loo (or Loon), Haarlem 1731-1784, was a noted flower painter who spent the whole of his life in Haarlem. His paintings are sought after and are found in leading institutions such as the Albertina in Vienna, the Fitzwilliam, Cambridge and Oak Spring, Virginia.

The accession of Louis XVI in 1774 was followed by a relaxation in the regulation of the book trade, making it easier for authors to publish their own works. No other writer was to take such copious advantage of these two developments as Pierre-Joseph Buchoz (1731-1807), a French physician, lawyer and naturalist. His works are characterized by the beauty of the illustrations, and their rarity owing to the small size of the print runs.

A Rathore Aims an Arrow at a Leaping Tiger

Levée sur les Lieux par les Orders de la Republique de Genes et mise au Jour Par le S.r Bernard AntoineJaillot Gégraphe Ord.re du Roy.</li><li>Venice: Giuseppe Antonio Remondini, 1784.</li><li>Original outline color.</li><li>Unframed.</li></ul> A Venetian edition of the map prepared by Bernard Antoine Jaillot for the Republic of Genova in the 1730s, at the time the island's overlords. Brothers Francesco and Paulo Santini were the editor and engraver respectively of their "Atlas Universel," first issued in 1776, before selling the plates to Remondini in 1781. By the time this version was published, Corsica had been secretly sold to France because of Pasquale Paoli's resistance to Genovese rule.

A finely decorated double-hemisphere world map, with two further spheres showing the northern and southern hemispheres and cherubs in the cusps.<ul><li>Pierre Mortier (Dutch).</li><li>Amsterdam: Covens &amp; Mortier, c. 1720.</li><li>Original color.</li></ul> The four corners are taken up with vignettes of the seasons, each with references to the Elements and the Zodiac. At first glance, the map looks like Frederick de Wit's map of c. 1670. However, this is a later issue first published by Pierre Mortier c. 1690 (who had purchased many of De Wit's plates), with the world divided at the meridian of 0º (the Canaries) rather than 350º. Differences include the appearance of "Compagnies Land" near Japan, the joining of the Cape York Peninsula and New Guinea, and a line of islands in the southeast Pacific.

A star chart from the second edition of Flamsteed's Atlas Coelestis.<ul><li>Hand-colored sign of the zodiac heightened with gold and silver.</li><li>Engraved by John Mynde.</li><li>Framed and glazed.</li></ul> Charles II founded the Royal Observatory in Greenwich in 1675, and in the same year, John Flamsteed (1646–1719) was appointed the first Astronomer Royal. Flamsteed began to collect data on the stars as observed using a telescope in order to create a star atlas showing the celestial sky above Greenwich. This was a huge undertaking and Flamsteed didn't live to see its publication, which was finally produced by his widow in 1729, ten years after his death. The stars were positioned and the astrological coordinates drawn by Abraham Sharp, while the figures in the constellations were after drawings by Sir James Thornhill and others. In his atlas, Flamsteed corrects the errors in position made by earlier astronomers such as Bayer in the 17th century. It was considered the first significant contribution of the&nbsp;Observatory, and the numerical Flamsteed designations for stars are still in use.

A map of Florida and Virginia.<ul><li>Willem Janszoon Blaeu (Dutch).</li><li>Virginiæ partis australis, et Floridæ partis orientalis, interjacecentiumq. regionum Nova Descriptio.</li><li>Amsterdam: 1640.</li><li>Original color.</li><li>Unframed.</li></ul> Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia and northern Florida, with the English and French Royal Arms marking their areas of influence. Although much of the information dates back to Le Moyne (1565) and White (1590), Blaeu has reshaped the coastline and added a few new details, for example, Jamestown and the Irish colony at Newport News on Chesapeake Bay. It has been claimed that to the left of the French armorial is a depiction of Niagara Falls, based on Indian hearsay and so well out of place.

The story of the Spanish Armada from the House of Lords tapestries.<ul><li>John Pine (English).</li><li>London: John Pine, 1739.</li><li>Printed from three plates.</li><li>Unframed.</li></ul> A pair of sea charts of the English Channel, printed in blue, within a decorative border printed from a third plate. The left plate shows the Spanish Armada of 1588 entering the Channel, blown by a delicately engraved wind head, watched by two putti and an allegorical figure of Britannia. The right plate shows the Armada in the famous crescent formation, with the English fleet behind them, pushing them up the Channel. In the center of the decorative border is a portrait of Elizabeth I. This is a plate from "The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords," drawn by Hubert-François Gravelot, engraved and published by John Pine. It depicts one of ten tapestries commissioned from the Dutch marine painter Hendrik Cornelisz Vroom by Lord Howard of Effingham in 1591 to commemorate the defeat of the Armada. Unfortunately they were destroyed when the Houses of Parliament burned down in 1834, leaving Pine's book as the only record. It is lucky that Pine worried that "Time, or Accident, or moths may deface these valuable shadows."

The elaborate title cartouche celebrates the region's maritime accomplishments.

A map of the seventeen United Provinces depicted as a lion, facing right, one paw raised (over Cologne). It is decorated with a large strapwork title cartouche, three pairs of costumes, two galleons and a sea monster.<ul><li>Hendrik Floris van Langren (Dutch).</li><li>Leo Belgicus. However, the original state is so rare (only three known examples) that it was often attributed to Pieter van der Keere (1571–post 1646), who added his name to the plate when he included it in his "La Germanie Inferieure de Petrus Keerius." This work, the first Dutch national atlas, was not a success (Koeman lists only three editions, in Latin 1617 &amp; 1622, and this French edition), so even his state of this map is rare. Janvier's large-format map of the British Isles.<ul><li>Jean Janvier (French).</li><li>Les Isles Britanniques Comprenant les Royaumes D'Angleterre D'Ecosse et D'Irlande.</li><li>Paris: Jean Lattré, 1791.</li><li>Original color.</li><li>Unframed.</li></ul> The British Isles divided into the Saxton kingdoms, with an inset of the Orkneys and Shetlands and a finely engraved title cartouche. This is a very uncommon large folio version of Lattre's own "Atlas Moderne" map, with an identical title and maritime design of the title cartouche.

A scarce French map of Africa.<ul><li>Guillaume Danet (French).</li><li>L'Afrique Dressée Sur Les Relations &amp; nouvelles decouvertes de differens Voyageurs Conformes aux observations Astronomiques.</li><li>Paris: Louis Charles Desnos, 1760.&nbsp;</li><li>Original color.</li><li>Unframed.</li></ul> A large and rare map of Africa, not listed in either Tooley or Norwich. It is decorated with a large allegorical cartouche featuring a female Europe and a male Africa, both holding manacles, representing the slave trade. The engraved border is filled with four armorials, European and Asian as well as African, interspersed with shells. Danet was the son-in-law and successor of De Fer, and republished many of his maps, but this item is apparently a new work, one of a series of "World and Continents" originally published in 1729-32. The crack in the printing plate in the right border was present in the 1732 edition.

The map objective of the founder of the Dutch colony at the Cape of Good Hope, Jan van Riebeeck, was to gather such skins to Japan.

The northern sheet has Europe and Asia with parts of Africa and North America; the southern shows the Americas south of California and Florida and "Terra Australis Incognita." The skies are being supported by Atlas on one side and Hercules on the other. The charts were published in the Atlas Coelestis; seu Harmonia Macrocosmica, the only celestial atlas to be produced in the Netherlands before the nineteenth century. It was a compilation of maps of the Ptolemaic universe and the more modern theories of Copernicus and Brahe, and remains the finest and most highly decorative celestial atlas ever produced. It was originally published by Jan Jansson in 1660; this chart comes from Schenk &amp; Valk's reissue.

Dutch Celestial Hemispheres  Charts

A map of the Peloponnese and part of Greece and the Greek Isles.<ul><li>Nicolas de Fer (French).</li><li>Cette Carte est faite Pour L'Intelligence des affaires Des Turcs et des Venetiens dans le Peloponese Aujourd'huy La Morée et les Isles de Zante, Cefalonie, Ste Maure, Cerigo. &amp;c.</li><li>Paris: circa 1715.</li><li>Unframed.</li></ul> Engraved by Liébaux, this detailed and finely rendered map of the Peloponnese is designed to show the respective possessions of the Venetians and Turks during the War of the Holy League (1683-98). Around the title cartouche are medallion-inset town plans of the towns captured by the Venetians. However, their dominion in the Morea was short-lived as it was returned to the Turks at the Treaty of Passarowitz in 1718 at the conclusion of the Turkish-Venetian war (1714-18).

French Map of the Peloponnese Region

A 17th century chart of the paths of Venus and Mercury.<ul><li>Andreas Cellarius (Dutch).</li><li>Theoria Veneris et Mercurii.</li><li>Amsterdam: Jan Jansson, 1660.&nbsp;</li><li>Original color with additions.</li><li>Unframed.</li></ul> A fine celestial diagram showing the apparent paths of Venus and Mercury as seen from Earth, within a border of winged windheads, cherubs and other allegorical figures. It was engraved by Jan van Loon and published in the "Atlas Coelestis; seu Harmonia Macrocosmica," the only celestial atlas to be produced in the Netherlands before the nineteenth century. It was a compilation of maps of the Ptolemaic universe and the more modern theories of Copernicus and Brahe, and remains the finest and most highly decorative celestial atlas ever produced. This example is from the first edition of the atlas; in 1661, a plate number was added to the bottom right.
