Description

The demise of imperial porcelain during the late Qing dynasty had one good outcome in that it released a group of highly trained and skilled decorators onto the private market. They joined a talented group of master porcelain painters working for private firms and in their own studios, artist Liu Yucen (Chinese, 1904-1969) being among them.

  • A painted tile featuring a pair of Chinese bulbuls perched on a branch of plum blossoms.
  • In Chinese, the words for plum and bulbuls form a rebus, wishing a couple longevity.
