Description

A Japanese woodblock print from the Meiji period.

  • Ginkō Adachi 安達吟光 (Japanese, b. 1853).
  • This print titled Kagoshima Newspaper relates an incident in the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877, led by Saigo Takamori. Saigo is shown seated at right outside Kagoshima Castle. One of his loyal samurai points out a large naval vessel sent by the Japanese government as it steams into the harbor. Saigo's opposition to the central government was eventually defeated, and he eventually committed suicide.
  • Unglazed in a black wood frame.
