Description

Framed autographed quotation by Frost from “A Lone Striker,” a poem based upon recollections of his early life, and a work from which extracts in the poet’s hand are not often seen.

  • Robert Frost (American).
  • N.p., N.D.
  • 8vo.
  • Pen and ink on paper.
  • Six lines, entirely in Frost‘s hand: “He knew another place, a wood, / And in it, tall as trees, were cliffs; / And if he stood on one of these, / ’Twould be among the tops of trees, / Their upper branches round him wreathing, / Their breathing mingled with his breathing … / [signed:] Robert Frost / For Stuart W. Jackson.”
  • The succeeding line in the poem gives the decisive thrust: “If — if he stood! Enough of ifs!”
  • The poem was published by Knopf in 1933 as one of the Knopf Borzoi Chap Books.
