Description

Dorothy Sturm (American, 1910-1988).

After training as an illustrator, Dorothy Sturm became part the first generation of Abstract Expressionists, showing with Betty Parsons Gallery from 1952 until 1978. Sturm taught art at the Memphis Academy of Art between 1938 and the late 1970s, and also assisted in establishing a collection of contemporary art at the Memphis Brooks Museum.


Her work is featured in numerous collections including the American Embassy in Paris, the Smithsonian Institution, Archives of American Art in Washington, D.C.; the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, AR; Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN; Charleston Museum in Charleston, WV; The Chicago Art Institute in Chicago, IL; the Jean DeMenil Collection in Paris; the First Tennessee Heritage Collection; JR Hyde, III Collection; Memphis Brooks Museum of Art and the National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis.
