Description

Ludwig Bemelmans (American, 1898-1962).

An original illustration from one of Bemelmans' earliest books, Noodle, written by Munro Leaf. The illustration shows the dachshund Noodle hiding beneath a long sofa, peering sideways at the reader. It appears as the last of three pictures, illustrating the first sentence of the book:

"This is the story of Noodle, who was very long from front - - - - - - to - - - - - - - - back, and very short from top to bottom."

Two years later, Bemelmans would publish the first of the Madeline books, which would make him famous.
