The first Hermès Birkin was a Birkin 40 gifted to Jane Birkin in 1984. The Birkin 40 originally retailed for $2,000. In 2011, Jane sold her first Birkin 40 for $162,000 to raise funds to support earthquake relief efforts in Japan. The Birkin 40 and 35 were the only sizes available until 1996.
