Description

Figure of Vishnu, one of the most important gods in the Hindu pantheon, hand-carved from wood.

  • Vishnu stands in slight tribhanga, wearing a tall kirtimukuta and foliate crown as well as circular earrings, a beaded collar, and a long string of beads.
  • The sacred thread, the upavita, is worn across his chest and he wears a jeweled girdle with a rosette clasp and a short dhoti with hanging garlands.
  • The primary right hand is in abhaya mudra, the left holding the bud of a lotus. The secondary left hand holds a bird.
  • Vishnu is flanked by his two consorts, encased in a floral and foliate aureole.
