Description

William Ross Cameron (American, 1893-1971).

This work is offered unframed.

A rare and luminous view of unspoiled, pre-war Sausalito with gaily-painted boats in drydock and a view across an old wooden jetty toward the rolling hills of Belvedere.

This notable California illustrator, etcher, watercolorist and lithographer was born in NYC and, by 1905, had settled in San Francisco. He first studied under Macky and Martinez at the California School of the Fine Arts (CSFA) and, later, with Perham Nahl at the California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC). After furthering his art studies in London and Paris, Cameron worked as a freelance illustrator and staff artist for the Oakland Post and the San Francisco Chronicle. By 1930, he was exhibiting his work nationally and became known for his delicate marine watercolors of the San Francisco Bay area. He later moved across the bay to Alameda and, subsequently, settled in Berkeley. William Ross Cameron was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards and his work is held in private and public collections, including the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts and San Francisco's de Young Museum, among others.
