Angie Marei was inspired by desert palm trees when designing the Ile De Philae Ring. She got the vision for this ring on a recent trip to Mexico. She was sitting under the shade of palm trees while brainstorming and sketching jewelry designs for the Brilliant & Black exhibition. When she looked up at the trees, she saw her ring, inspired by Ancient Egypt, Egyptian date fruit palm trees and the extreme heat of the sun. She wanted to translate textures and negative spaces of the palm trees into this piece, so the ring elegantly sits over three fingers like a giant palm leaf providing shade. She named this piece after the Ancient Egyptian island of Philae, where the sacred temple of Isis was built.

This piece is part of Sotheby's Brilliant and Black: Age of Enlightenment, the selling exhibition dedicated to showcasing the extraordinary skill, imagination and craftsmanship of Black jewelry designers.
