Description
Reprinted copy of Dali's 1977 exploration of the many myths of the grape, in texts and sensuous and subversive works by Dalí.
The expansive career of Salvador Dalí as a painter, sculptor, writer and graphic designer made him one of the most recognized artists of the 20th century.
Born in 1904, Dalí studied at the Real Academie de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, befriending Luis Buñuel and Federico García Lorca. His interest in Impressionism and the Renaissance expanded to newer art movements such as Cubism and Dadaism. Showing exceptional skill in still lifes, Dalí was already enjoying critical success when he joined the Surrealist group in 1929.
Many of his paintings such as The Persistence of Memory (1931) and Soft Construction with Boiled Beans: Premonition of Civil War (1936) were influenced by Freud as well as Picasso and Miró. During the Spanish Civil War, Dalí moved to the U.S., where his exhibitions were greeted with commercial success. He returned to Spain in 1948 in support of the Franco regime, which led to his expulsion from the Surrealist group. During this time, Dalí embraced Catholicism and mysticism, and produced a well-received autobiography, The Secret Life of Salvador Dalí.
With the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the Dalí Theatre-Museum in his hometown of Figueres, Dalí has left an indelible impression on today’s art world.
