William Samuel Kies (1877–1950) was a prominent American lawyer, banker, investment executive, and early advocate for expanding American commerce abroad. After completing his education, Kies began a successful legal career in Chicago and, by his late twenties, became general attorney for the Chicago and Northwestern Railway system. In 1912, he moved to New York to join the National City Bank, where he helped organize its Foreign Trade Department and develop its South American banking network. He later served as Vice President of the American International Corporation, traveled extensively in Europe and Latin America on matters of finance and trade, and ultimately founded the investment banking firm W. S. Kies & Co. His career placed him at the forefront of the early twentieth-century expansion of American banking, investment, and international commerce.
