Basil Hayden, nicknamed Old Grand-Dad, ranked among the earliest commercial whiskey distillers in Kentucky, and the bourbon that bears his likeness has carried down through the ages. Hayden’s descendants honored him by establishing the Old Grand-Dad Distillery in Hobbs Station, Kentucky after the Civil War. R.E. Wathen, scion of a different bourbon dynasty, bought the distillery in 1899, and over the next two decades turned out prized bourbons – including this bottle. Distilled in 1917 and released in 1933, the final year of Prohibition.

National Distillers Products Corporation (which evolved out of The Whiskey Trust) owned several significant American whiskey distilleries and brands, namely: Old Grand Dad, Old Overholt, Old Crow, Old Taylor, Sunny Brook, Hill and Hill, Mount Vernon, Chicken Cock and Bourbon de Luxe. The wines & spirits business was sold to Jim Beam in 1987. At points in its history, National Distillers bought back several bottles of the whisky it had once produced and displayed them in its 'Museum of Old Bottles', at its headquarters on Park Avenue in New York. This collection of pre-prohibition distilled whiskey was acquired by the consignor directly from the National Distillers Museum in 1993.

Proceeds from this lot go toward World Central Kitchen, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. Founded in 2010 by Chef José Andrés, World Central Kitchen (WCK) is first to the frontlines providing fresh meals in response to crises. Applying their model of quick action, leveraging local resources, and adapting in real time, WCK has served more than 600 million nourishing meals around the world.
