Description

Château Cheval Blanc 1989

St. Emilion, 1er Grand Cru Classé (A)

u. 2bn, 3vts, 1 label very slightly soiled, 1 very slightly stained, 3 capsules slightly damaged

The earliest vintage of the century at Cheval Blanc and there were days when the temperature went over 40 degrees Celsius. Close to 50% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Franc, which is unusual here. A very generous 47 hl/hectare made. In 2021, this was absolutely sensational, immensely exciting, spicy and exotic on the nose, promising everything - and then magnificently delivering on the palate! Rich and sumptuous, with flawless fruit, concentration (and with that yield!) and endless length. Every mouthful reveals a mosaic of aromatics, glossy texture and far-reaching flavours. It is poised at perfection, which is where I think it will stay. A landmark Claret of my life. Serena Sutcliffe, MW
