Offered is a PSA EX 5 example of the 1958 Ave Colecao Titulares #86 Pelé rookie card, one of the most significant and sought-after Brazilian cards in the history of the football collecting hobby, and among the rarest Pelé rookies in existence.

The 1958 Titulares do Futebol set is one of the most elusive Brazilian card issues from Pelé's rookie year. Published and distributed in Brazil by Ave Ltda., the set was produced as part of a collector's album titled the Titulares Album, meaning "album holder" in Portuguese, which fans were encouraged to complete by affixing each card directly to its corresponding page. Many fans heeded the advice, which has left a scant number of unglued cards in the marketplace. The cards were printed on thin stock, and the combination of fragile materials, the gluing convention, and the decades since their production has made surviving examples in presentable grades extraordinarily rare. High grades are almost nonexistent.

Card #86 features a beaming portrait of the young Santos star in Brazil's yellow and green kit, with a black facsimile signature gracing the card's front. Card #86's lower population makes it the scarcer of the two Pelé entries in the set — the other being card #50, which features a more guarded expression on the teenage prodigy. The reverse of the card bears a number 10 in either blue or black depending on the variation, with the remainder of the reverse left blank. It is a card of quiet, understated design, a headshot of a young man in a yellow shirt, produced in his home country, in the year he changed the sport forever.

The significance of this card's Brazilian origin cannot be overstated. Unlike the 1958 Alifabolaget, which was produced in Sweden by a foreign manufacturer to commemorate a tournament played on foreign soil, the Ave Colecao Titulares was made in Brazil , the country that produced Pelé, the country that sent him to Sweden, and the country that erupted when he came home a champion. It is a domestic artifact of a national triumph, produced for Brazilian collectors who watched the seventeen-year-old from Tres Coracoes become the most famous footballer on earth.

The 1958 World Cup was the stage on which Pelé announced himself to the world. He entered the tournament as a substitute, barely known outside of Santos. He finished it with six goals in four matches, a hat-trick in the semi-final against France, and two goals in the final itself, becoming both the youngest scorer and the youngest winner in World Cup history, records that stand to this day. The Brazilian government subsequently declared him an official national treasure to prevent his transfer abroad. This card was produced in that same extraordinary year, for the Brazilian public that claimed him first.

The Grade

A PSA EX 5 represents a meaningful and highly collectable example of one of the scarcest Pelé rookies in the hobby. The thin card stock, the album-gluing convention, and the decades of handling and storage that characterize surviving examples of this set mean that the population at every grade level is remarkably thin. According to the PSA Population Report at the time of cataloguing, this example is one of only three PSA-graded copies of this card in existence, with just one graded higher. It ranks among the finest known examples of the 1958 Ave Colecao Titulares #86 in the world, representing a genuinely rare opportunity to acquire a piece of Pelé's earliest Brazilian cardboard legacy at the very top of its surviving population.

Often considered the greatest footballer of all time, Pelé joined Santos FC as a fifteen-year-old in 1956 and quickly developed into one of the league's most prolific scorers. By sixteen he was a regular scorer at the Brazilian club level. He gained global recognition at the 1958 World Cup, where he scored six goals across four matches, was named to the World Cup All-Star Team, and became the youngest player ever to appear in and score in a World Cup Final.

He went on to help Brazil win the Jules Rimet trophy again in 1962 and 1970. His three World Cup victories remain the most of any player in the history of football. At Santos across nineteen seasons, he scored 643 goals for the club, a record that stood as the most goals for a single club for over forty years until surpassed by Lionel Messi in 2020.

Upon joining the New York Cosmos in 1975, Pelé brought an entirely new level of visibility to football in the United States. He led the Cosmos to the 1977 NASL Championship and set multiple attendance records, including a crowd of 77,691 for the Cosmos' 1977 playoff match against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. The youth participation boom that followed laid the foundation for the 1994 World Cup, the launch of MLS in 1996, and the return of the World Cup to North America in 2026.

He was named joint FIFA Player of the Century alongside Diego Maradona. He passed away on 29 December 2022 at the age of eighty-two.
