Offered is a PSA VG 3 example of the 1958 Ave Ltda. Colecao Titulares #50 Pelé rookie card, one of the most significant and sought-after Brazilian cards in the history of the football collecting hobby, and among the rarest Pelé rookies known to exist in any grade.

Ave Ltda. was a Brazilian publisher that produced the Colecao Titulares set in 1958 as part of a collector's album distributed across Brazil. The album's full title translates as "Titulares Album," meaning "album holder," and the reverse of each card actively encouraged collectors to affix the cards directly onto its pages. The vast majority of collectors heeded that advice, removing these cards from individual circulation permanently and leaving only a scant number of unglued examples surviving in the marketplace today. The cards were printed on thin stock, and the combination of the album-affixing convention, fragile materials, and nearly seven decades of age has made surviving examples in presentable grades extraordinarily scarce at any level.

Card #50 is one of two Pelé entries in the set, alongside card #86. It presents Pelé in a distinctive image that sets it apart from its companion: in the background, two players contest a football beneath the watchful eye of a coach, while the young Santos star is foregrounded against the scene. It is a card of quiet documentary power, produced in Brazil, in the year Pelé changed the sport, for the Brazilian public that had sent him to Sweden and watched him come home a champion. While it was initially believed that all cards in this set were hand cut, this has since been established as incorrect. Examples without the hand-cut designation, such as this one, represent the cleaner and more complete survival of the original printed format, free from the irregularities of manual cutting.

The significance of this card's Brazilian origin deepens with context. Unlike the 1958 Alifabolaget, produced in Sweden by a foreign manufacturer that barely knew his name, the Ave Colecao Titulares was made in Pelé's own country, in his own language, celebrating his own squad. The album from which it comes included players from the Campeonato Paulista alongside a dedicated section for the 1958 World Cup squad, placing Pelé's card within a document of Brazilian football's greatest season at both the club and international level. At Santos in 1958, Pelé set the all-time Campeonato Paulista scoring record with 58 goals, a record that has never been surpassed. On the international stage, he became the youngest scorer and youngest winner in World Cup history. This card was produced in the year both of those things happened.

The 1958 World Cup was the stage on which Pelé announced himself to the world. He entered the tournament as a substitute, barely known outside of Santos. He finished it with six goals in four matches, a hat-trick in the semi-final against France, and two goals in the final itself against Sweden, becoming both the youngest scorer and youngest winner in World Cup history, records that stand to this day. The Brazilian government subsequently declared him an official national treasure to prevent his transfer abroad.

Often considered the greatest footballer of all time, Pelé joined Santos FC as a fifteen-year-old in 1956 and quickly developed into one of the league's most prolific scorers. He gained global recognition at the 1958 World Cup, where he scored six goals across four matches, was named to the World Cup All-Star Team, and became the youngest player ever to appear in and score in a World Cup Final.

He went on to help Brazil win the Jules Rimet trophy again in 1962 and 1970. His three World Cup victories remain the most of any player in the history of football. At Santos across nineteen seasons, he scored 643 goals for the club, a record that stood as the most goals for a single club for over forty years until surpassed by Lionel Messi in 2020.

Upon joining the New York Cosmos in 1975, Pelé brought an entirely new level of visibility to football in the United States. He led the Cosmos to the 1977 NASL Championship and set multiple attendance records, including a crowd of 77,691 for the Cosmos' 1977 playoff match against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. The youth participation boom that followed laid the foundation for the 1994 World Cup, the launch of MLS in 1996, and the return of the World Cup to North America in 2026.

He was named joint FIFA Player of the Century alongside Diego Maradona. He passed away on 29 December 2022 at the age of eighty-two.
