Charles Bunnell studied under Ernest Lawson from 1927 to 1928 at the Broadmoor Art Academy, becoming an instructor himself in 1929. Despite his  traditional training, Bunnell developed a type of abstraction designed to use color and form to evoke emotional and intuitive responses. During the Depression in the 1930s, Bunnell taught under federal art projects, including work as an assistant to master muralist Frank Mechau. Bunnell is a well-rounded artist, able to call himself a painter, printmaker, and muralist, and is the subject of many solo exhibitions, demonstrating the reach of his art.
