Born in 1952 in Santa Monica, California, Ronald Stephen Riddick grew up in an art-centered environment influenced by his father’s work near the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He studied at Chouinard Art Institute, Otis Art Institute, Santa Monica College, and Art Center College of Design, later working as a commercial artist and in a printmaking workshop. His training with Ukrainian-born painter Sergei Bongart further shaped his foundation in plein air academic realism.

A visit to the Southwest inspired Riddick’s move to Arizona in 1979, where he began to focus on Western themes that would define his career. He was subsequently elected to the Cowboy Artists of America and continues to live and work east of Tucson.
