Born to pioneer parents in Potter Valley, California, Grace Carpenter Hudson had an early talent for drawing and honed her craft at the San Francisco School of Design in the early 1880s. In the nineties, Hudson began painting the Pomo Native peoples residing in Northern California. Her most famous painting Little Mendocino, executed in 1893 and now in the collection of the California Historical Society in San Francisco, garnered significant public attention and recognition as an artist. At the turn of the century, women all over the United States were beginning to be recognized in fields that had previously been exclusively male, and Hudson, with works such as It is a Good World, helped solidify her impact and influence.
