San Diego, Orr's Gallery, Frank Coburn: An Early Los Angeles Painter, 1991, no. 70, p. 107, illustrated in color; p. 132

Frank Coburn began his career as an ornamental sign painter, but later decided to move to Los Angeles from the Midwest in 1908. There, he began to take sketching trips around California and exhibited in many galleries around Los Angeles. Much of Coburn’s oeuvre, like Indians in Ceremonial Robes, is characterized by bright and picturesque color in the Impressionist style.
