Kaspar Karsen was born in Amsterdam, where he was taught by his uncle George Westenberg, a painter who specialized in city views and landscapes. He went on to follow courses at the city academy given by the painter Hendrick ten Cate. Karsen travelled from a very early age, especially to northern France, Germany and Austria.
Stolzenfels castle is a fortress whose history goes back to the thirteenth century, situated near Koblenz on the banks of the Rhine. Destroyed in the seventeenth century, the castle was rebuilt in a Romantic style inspired by the Gothic aesthetic by Frederick-William IV. The towns of Niederlahnstein and Oberlahnstein lie on either side of the river. Karsen created fantasy landscapes in which imagined elements combine with sights seen on his walks and topographical reality.
