After studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Julien Dupré joined the studios of Isidore Pils and Henri Lehmann. He very quickly began devoting his energies to scenes of daily rural life.
Like his contemporaries Bastien-Lepage and Dagnan-Bouveret, Dupré was one of the Realists. He enjoyed describing simple scenes, stripped of any symbolic or moral purpose. Simple contemplation was the only aim of the work. In the present composition, a young woman who has stopped beside a drinking place seems momentarily distracted: turning her gaze to the right, perhaps she is simply pausing to observe her surroundings.
Julien Dupré started exhibiting at the Salon in 1876, and his work was admired by the public and by dealers: Goupil and Knoedler exhibited his work in London and New York in the 1880s, and a retrospective was held for him at the Metropolitan Museum in 1887. Dated to about 1900 by Howard L. Rehs and Janet Whitmore, the present work is an example of the artist’s interest in momentary scenes of rural life.
