A painter of historical and mythological subjects, Jean Alaux was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome in 1815. While he was staying at the Villa Medici from 1817 to 1821, he became friends with Ingres who made two portraits of him in graphite. Jean Alaux painted Ingres in his studio (Musée de Montauban), which remains one of his most well-known works.

He was one of King Louis-Philippe’s favourite painters, and the monarch entrusted him with important works, especally for the Château de Versailles, where Alaux made several panels for the Galerie des Batailles.
