Description

Attributed to Francesco Solimena

Canale 1657 - 1747 Naples

Saint Barbara

Oil on canvas

65,5 x 52,3 cm ; 25¾ by 20⅝ in.

Private Collection, Spain.

This work, which is in fine condition, revisits – with some modifications to the iconography – a fresco of Santa Maria Donnalbina in Naples, painted by Solimena between 1693 and 1698 (see N. Spinoza, Francesco Solimena (1657-1747) e le Arti a Napoli, Rome 2018, p. 320, fig. 125d).

While the fresco’s subject was St Margaret of Antioch, the artist or a member of his workshop (Francesco de Mura ?) has reprised the whole figure of the saint but changed the attributes, transforming her into St Barbara, as is indicated by the fortified tower cradled in the young martyr’s right arm.
