Collection of the Rochechouart de Mortemart Family since the 18th Century;
Thence by descent.
Son of the Elector Ferdinand-Maria and Henriette-Adélaïde of Savoy, grandson of Emperor Ferdinand II and great-grandson of King Henri IV, Maximilian II was himself Elector of Bavaria from 1679 to 1726. When they married in 1685, Marie-Antoinette of Austria gave him her rights to the Spanish succession as a dowry. He was named Governor of the Spanish Netherlands by Charles II in 1692, a position he occupied until 1706. Appropriate to his glorious military career, Maximilian II is here shown in armour, with the collar of the Toison d’Or affixed to his breastplate. The composition of this portrait partly reprises the bust of the Elector viewed against the background of a battle scene, painted by Joseph Vivien, which was unfortunately destroyed in the fire at the Munich Residenz in 1944.
