Collection of the Rochechouart de Mortemart Family since the 18th Century;
Thence by descent.
Louis XIV is portrayed with a majestic bearing and haughty demeanour, looking confidently out at the viewer. He wears armour decorated with fleurs-de-lys, underlining both his military importance and his royal powers. Framed by a long brown wig, his expression is solemn, though there is a faint smile upon his lips. The painting is particularly close to the portrait of Louis XIV by Hyacinthe Rigaud, now in the Museo del Prado (oil on canvas, 238 x 149 cm; inv. P002343), dated 1701. This large painting was the subject of many copies, replicas and engravings, which may have inspired the artist of the present work to create this composition centred on the sovereign’s face.
