Mercure de France, August 1786, pp. 142-143.

In the setting of a cave, an old woman examines the lines of a young girl’s hand and seems to be offering her advice. The scene was the subject of a preparatory drawing now in the Auckland Art Gallery in New Zealand (inv. 1957/23/1), dated c. 1765–1781. Etienne Aubry’s painting was then taken up by Nicolas de Launay who made an engraving of it, in which the scene is contained in an oval. The engraving was exhibited at the 1787 Salon as no. 315 and formed part of a series of eight, whose other subjects were L’Heureuse fécondité, Dites-nous donc s’il vous plaît, Les Beignets, L’enfant chéri, Le Bonheur du ménage, La Gaîté conjugale and La Félicité Villageoise
