Description

Albert Pénot

Xermamenil 1862 - 1930 Paris

La Fille d'Eve

Oil on canvas

Signed lower left A. Penot

60,5 x 162,5 cm ; 23⅞ by 64 in.

Anonymous sale, Tajan, Paris, 25 March 2015, lot 179.

Paris, Salon, 1908, no. 1426.

A pupil of Gabriel Perrier, Albert Pénot’s success was largely based on his paintings of female nudes and fantasy themes such as La Femme chauve-souris (Sotheby's, London, 15 January 2018, lot 35, sold for 137,500 GBP).

The present work, ingeniously titled ‘The daughter of Eve’ because the nude, lying on her side, holds an apple in her right hand, was exhibited at the 1908 Paris Salon.
