G. de Lastic and P. Jacky, Desportes, Catalogue raisonné, Saint-Rémy-en-l'Eau 2010, p. 11, no. P 17.

Famous for his animal paintings, Desportes created his large compositions with the help of studies he painted in oil on paper. This is the case for the present Eurasian oystercatcher, which had already been the subject of a drawing in pierre noire and sepia wash on paper (Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, inv. P II no. 15). Desportes had produced this drawing in his youth after a work by Nicasius Bernaerts, executed for the pavilion of the Menagerie at Versailles and now in the Château-Musée de Gien.
