Description
Follower of Giovanni Battista Naldini
Diana and Actaeon
Oil on copper
32,1 x 42,2 cm ; 12⅝ by 16⅝ in.
This painting on copper, in fine condition, may be compared to a work by Giovanni Battista Naldini in the Museo Borgogna in Vercelli (inv. 1906), which is also painted on copper and has the same vertical composition, though the framing is tighter.
In the present case, the painter – who cannot be Naldini – has expanded the width of the scene and introduced numerous modifications with respect to Vercelli’s painting. In particular, the hairstyles of Diana and the nymphs accompanying her appear to be of a slightly later date, suggesting that the work can probably be dated to the very end of the sixteenth century rather than the 1570s.
