A female hunting dog is pointing, towards the right, in front of some flowers and vegetation.
This painting by Jean-Baptiste Oudry bears similarities to several other compositions. An oil on canvas (location unknown) features the same animal in a more finished version, against the background of a landscape which only reveals a few centimetres of sky in the top right corner. Two other larger compositions again show this same dog against a landscape background, this time pointing over a pheasant behind a few flowers, which also partly appear in the present painting (one of these works is in the Royal Palace in Stockholm).
Rapidly executed, this painting, a true portrait of the hound, could be a preparatory work for the more finished composition or might have been painted as a way of remembering this animal with a view to incorporating it in other compositions. It is extremely difficult to date, but Pierre Jacky suggests assigning it to a period between 1725 and 1740.
