Description
Gold Medal
1936
SCP Auctions,
Private Collector
Sotheby’s is proud to offer the 1936 Olympic gold medal awarded to Carl Shy, a member of the first ever United States men’s Olympic basketball team that captured the first Gold Medal in history.
The 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin marked the Olympic debut of basketball, introducing the sport to the international stage for the first time. Representing the United States, Carl Shy and his teammates dominated the competition, winning all of their contests and advancing to the gold medal game against Canada.
Played outdoors on a rain-soaked clay and dirt court, the final remains one of the most unusual championship contests in basketball history. The United States prevailed 19–8 to secure the inaugural Olympic gold medal and establish the nation’s early dominance in international basketball.
The lot is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Carl Shy's niece.
