T-38 Simulator Panel schematic with interactive switches, measuring approximately 38.25 x 29.5 inches.
Panel demonstrates primary flight display and flight management systems with 11 toggle switches (the switches for Fuel Shutoff; Squawk IFF [transponder and identification systems]; RAM DUMP; Boost Pumps; and left and right generators all under red switch guards ) and two buttons for left and right Engine Start. Produced for training. Wire affixed to verso for hanging.
A T-38 Talon Flight Simulator Panel Display
The Northrop T-38 Talon is a supersonic jet designed for training Air Force, Navy, and NASA pilots. It was the world's first supersonic trainer aircraft. NASA added T-38s into their training program in the 1960s during Project Gemini.
The T-38 spaceflight readiness training proved especially critical in honing skills used by astronauts during the shuttle program, both for those with military aviator training and for civilian mission specialists. This simulator panel dates from the 1980s and was produced for pilots in training to familiarize themselves with the flight systems and the order in which the systems are activated.
An updated iteration of the aircraft is still in use by astronauts in training today.
