Description

[Apollo 13]

FLOWN embroidered mission patch, 4 inches in diameter, featuring the mission insignia with three horses traveling from the Earth to the Moon with the Sun in the background. “Ex Luna, Scientia” is Latin for “From the Moon, Knowledge.” Affixed to a provenance letter signed by Apollo 13 Commander JAMES LOVELL and featured in a presentation alongside a photograph of the damaged Command Service Module signed and inscribed by Lunar Module Pilot Fred Haise. Haise’s inscription reads: “Boom! / The Apollo 13 SM / Fred Haise / Apollo 13 LMP.” Altogether under matting measuring 20.1 x 11.5 inches.

EMBROIDERED MISSION PATCH FLOWN AROUND THE MOON.

Commander James Lovell’s letter reads, in full:

The attached patch was flown aboard the Apollo 13 spacecraft on its flight round the moon April 11-17, 1970. / This patch was designed by the artist Lumen Winter after a mural he painted for the St. Regis Hotel in New York City. / Sincerely, / James A. Lovell.”

The photograph included with the flown mission patch offers a view of the severely damaged Apollo 13 service module (SM) as captured from the lunar module/command module (CM). An entire panel on the SM was blown away by the explosion of an oxygen tank in the “Boom!” inscribed by LMP Fred Haise.
