Description
10 ⅝ x 14 in. 1 p. autograph manuscript lyrics for Joni Mitchell’s “Marcie,” from her 1968 debut album Song to a Seagull. 23 lines, neatly written in sepia ink on cream paper, recto only.
With “Marcie,” Joni Mitchell offers a poignant vignette of a forlorn woman waiting in vain for a lover who never returns. Vivid imagery of changing seasons underscore Marcie’s loss of hope; as the green of summer fades into an autumnal red—and, eventually, a wind-chilled winter—so too does Marcie’s hope that her sorrows may one day be answered by the man she so dearly longs for. Characteristically Mitchell, the song powerfully grapples with themes of love, loss, and longing.
A wistful, evocative ballad, “Marcie” is but one example of Mitchell’s sheer talent as a songwriter and storyteller; Song to a Seagull is replete with Mitchell’s exceptional ability to paint rich pictures with her lyrics—a true wordsmith at work.
