Ritual and Reality III assembles an important group of bronzes drawn from three distinguished collections: the Hsiao-Ya Chai Collection, the T. T. Tsui Collection and the Louis Y. C. Fung Collection of the Min Chiu Society. Spanning three thousand years of Chinese bronze casting, the group ranges from the ritual vessels of the early dynasties to later works in which the sacred and the worldly meet. At its centre stands a gold and silver-inlaid gilt-bronze lamp of the Warring States period, cast in the form of a warrior. In it the achievement of the early Chinese bronze-caster is fully apparent: several materials and a number of exacting techniques are brought together, yet resolve into a single, assured design.
