This was the fifth James Bond film produced by Eon Productions. It was directed by Lewis Gilbert, in the first of three Bond films that he would direct for Eon Productions. The screenplay for the film was written by Roald Dahl, and is vaguely based on Ian Fleming's 1964 novel. During filming it was announced that Sean Connery would retire from playing Bond, although he did make a comeback in Diamonds are Forever in 1971 and Never Say Never Again in 1983.
