This composition closely relates to a lost original of around 1525–30 by Quentin Massys, the best-known, extant version of which hangs today in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.1 As argued by Leontine Buijnsters-Smets (see Literature), the present version was probably executed by Jan Massys (c. 1509–1573), Quentin's son, who headed up his father's workshop towards the end of Quentin's life.
