Jonathan Richardson Junr (1694-1771), London (L. 2170), his mount, partly trimmed;
sale, Sotheby's, Milan, 22 June 2004, lot 38 (as Luca Cambiaso),
where acquired by the present owner
Mary Newcome in 2005 proposed to the owner an attribution to Bartolomeo Gagliardo. The drawing in the Uffizi, A satyr carrying a nymph, mentioned in the Sotheby's sale in 2004, seems to be by the same hand.1 The biographer of Genoese artists, Raffaele Soprani (1612-1672), records the artist date of birth and Genoa as Gagliardo's native city. He has dedicated almost two pages to Gagliardo, who he describes as 'dotato di fertilissimo ingegno' (very gifted) and especially inclined alla Pittura.2
